The sun is setting, brightening your kids' faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do,here's a bit of surprising science:Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.
Taking too many pictures could actually harm the brain's ability to keep memories, says Elizabeth Loftus,a psychology professor at the University of California,Irvine. So we get the photo but kind of lose the memory.
Photography "outsources" memories. It works in two ways:We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures,or we're so distracted (分散注意力的) by the process that we miss the moment altogether.
The first explanation is the loss of memory.People know that their camera is recording that moment,so they don't try to remember.Similarly,if you write down someone's phone number, you're less likely to remember it offhand because your brain tells you there's just no need. That's all well and good一until that piece of paper goes missing.
The other is distraction. We're distracted by the process of taking a photo - how we hold our phone, composing the photo, such as smiling faces, the background to our liking and clear image, all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize.
However, taking photos can benefit memory一when done mindfully. While taking a photo may be distracting, the act of preparation by focusing on visual (視覺(jué)的) details around has some upsides.
When people take the time to zoom in (拉近鏡頭) on specific things, memories become strengthened.Another benefit is that we recall moments more accurately (準(zhǔn)確的) with the photos.Memory has been reshaped with the help of new information and new experiences. Thus, photos or videos help us recall moments as if they really happened.
Memories die away without o visual record backing them up.Therefore,a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.

  • 1.Breakdancing may make its debut(首次亮相)as an Olympic sport at Paris 2024,Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, said on February 21.Skateboarding,sport climbing and surfing which have already been added to Tokyo 2020,have been invited to return in Paris.
Estanguet said the choices responded to a need to make the Olympics "more urban" and "more artistic". "We have chosen to present the International Olympic Committee(IOC)with the four sports because they are creative, appealing to youth and completely in line with our vision. They reflect perfectly Paris 2024's identity. "
Breakdancing is an example of a sport "which can be played anywhere and anytime in urban and other environments".It appeared at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in the form of head-to-head "battles".In competitive breakdancing,"breakers" face off in "battles" against each other, either as individuals or teams.Breakdancers use a mix of physical and artistic skills combining elements from gymnastics or acrobatics(雜技).
The IOC had announced that the number of competitors at Paris 2024 would be restricted to 10,500,which limited the opportunity to add sports. But the organizers said the inclusion would not need the construction of permanent facilities(設(shè)施)and would involve just 248 competitors, including 32 breakdancers. The surfing events are likely to be held in established surf centers such as Biarritz or Lacanau in southwest France.
The inclusion still needs to be rubber-stamped by the IOC,which is expected to decide on which sports to add in Paris 2024 after Tokyo 2020.

(1)What do we know about breakdancing?

    A.It involves multiple skills.

    B.They perfectly reflect Paris' identity.
C.They make Paris more urban and artistic.
D.They can be played anytime and anywhere.
(3)What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

A.10,500 competitors will compete for the new sports.
B.More surf centers will be specially designed for Paris 2024.
C.The IOC will reject the proposal because of inadequate facilities.
D.The inclusion won't require additional competition space to be built.
(4)Which is the closest in meaning to the underlined word "rubber-stamped" in the last paragraph?

    A.Recognized.
    B.Canceled.
    C.Refused.

  • 3.What Is Social Media? Not many people ask the question "What is social media?" anymore.Social media has been around for years now,and most of us would probably describe it as any Internet medium that can be used to share information with others, including blogs, forums, applications, games, websites and other stuff.
But let me ask you this:what exactly is so "social" about sitting before a computer setting up a blog and blogging for days without anybody reading it,or scrolling through your Facebook feed of information from 500 friends you barely know?If you ask me,it can be way more antisocial than anything.
Social media is not a "thing".It's not just Facebook,WeChat and Weibo. It's more of a frame of mind and a state of being. It's about how you use it to improve your relationships with other people in real life. However,we tend to rely on technology and social media so much that it can actually tear apart those relationships.
Social media isn't about numbers. When someone says "social media",web giants like Facebook,Twitter,WeChat and Weibo instantly pop into our minds, often because they have more updates, more friends, more followers, more links, more photos and more everything. We tend to get distracted by the number game, thinking "volume, volume, volume".It leads to a lot of meaningless noise and information overload. As the old saying goes, quality over quantity is usually the way to go.So,social media is not just about lots of people aimlessly spreading lots of information.
Social media needs to have an "IRL" factor—an Internet slang standing for "In Real Life".It should affect how a person thinks or acts offline. After all, social media shouldn't be an end in itself. It was built to enhance your actual social life,in real life.Take for example an event that a person attends because he is invited by the host on Facebook through a Facebook event page.Something like that definitely has the IRL factor.Likewise,a WeChat photo that touches someone so much that they feel the need to bring it up and describe it to someone else during a dinner date also has the IRL factor.
So,is it really considered to be social to spend an hour scrolling through photos on Weibo, with no thoughtful or emotional effect and no interaction with others? In fact, there is no wall between real life and Internet life where true social media exists.Social media is not a specific place on the Internet or just a thing you use to see what other people are doing. It's all about creating meaningful experiences and relationships wherever you may be.

(1)What does the underlined phrase "tear apart" in Paragraph 3 mean in the text?

    A.Destroy.
    B.Change.
    C.Continue.
    D.Strengthen.
(2)The writer thinks that social media should be

C.a(chǎn) collection of online applications where ideas are exchanged
D.a(chǎn) group name for online platforms used to strengthen meaningful relationships
(3)According to the author, which of the following cases has an IRL factor?

A.Updating Facebook on a regular basis.
B.Following new friends in real life on Facebook.
C.Visiting a museum with friends after reading a story on Weibo.
D.Reading Twitter to see what other people are doing and thinking about.
(4)What is the authors purpose of writing this article?

A.To explain the importance of social media.
B.To inform the negative effects of social media.
C.To call on readers to use social media to promote real social life.
D.To encourage readers to interact with others in real life more often.
