試題詳情
In 1943,when I was four,my parents moved from Coeur d'Alene,Idaho,to Fairbanks,Alaska(阿拉斯加),where adventures were never very far away.
We arrived in the summer, just in time to enjoy the midnight sun.All that sunlight was wonderful for Mum's vegetable garden.Working in the garden at midnight tended to throw her timing off,so she didn't care much about my bedtime.
Dad was a Railway Express agent and Mum worked there with him. That left me in a mess.I usually managed to find some trouble to get into.Once I had a little fire going in the basement of a hotel.I had tried to light a barrel(桶)of paint but couldn't really get a good fire going. The smoke got pretty bad, though, and when I made my exit,a crowd and the police were there to greet me.The policemen took away my matches and drove me home.
Mum and Dad were occupied in the garden and Dad told the police to keep me,and they did!I had a tour of the prison until Mum rescued me.I hadn't turned five yet.
As I entered kindergarten, the serious cold began to set in.Would it surprise you to know that I soon left part of my tongue on a metal(金屬)handrail at school?
As for Leonhard Seppala, famous as a dogsledder(拉雪橇者),I think I knew him well because I was taken for a ride with his white dog team one Sunday. At the time I didn't realize what a superstar he was,but I do remember the ride well.I was wrapped(包裹)heavily and well protected from the freezing and blowing cold weather.
In 1950,we moved back to Coeur d'Alene, but we got one more Alaskan adventure when eight years later Leonhard paid a visit to Idaho to invite us to attend a gathering of former neighbors in Alaska.

When I lived in Spain, some Spanish friends of mine decided to visit England by car. Before they left, they asked me for advice about how to find accommodation.I suggested that they should stay at "bed and breakfast" houses, because this kind of accommodation gives a foreign visitor a good chance to speak English with the family. My friends listened to my advice, but they came back with some funny stories.
"We didn't stay at "bed and breakfast" houses," they said, "because we found that most families were away on holiday."
I thought this was strange. Finally I understood what had happened. My friends spoke little English, and they thought "VACANCIES" meant "holidays",because the Spanish word for "holidays" is "vacaciones".So they did not go to house where the sign outside said "VACANCIES",which in English means there are free rooms. Then my friends went to house where the sign said "NO VACANCIES",because they thought this meant the people who owned the house were not away on holiday. But they found that these houses were all full.As a result, they stayed at hotels!
We laughed about this and about mistakes my friends made in reading other signs. In Spanish, the word "DIVERSION" means fun.In English,it means that workmen are repairing the road, and that you must take a different road. When my friends saw the word "DIVERSION" on a road sign, they thought they were going to have fun.Instead, the road ended in a large hole.
English people have problems too when they learn foreign languages.Once in Paris, when someone offered me some more coffee,I said "Thank you" in French.I meant that I would like some more. However,to my surprise, the coffeepot was taken away!Later I found out that "Thank you" in French means "No,thank you."

A.it would be convenient for them to have dinner
B.it would be much cheaper than staying in hotels

(3)The writer's friends stayed at hotels at last because
.
A.they misunderstood the signs outside the door
B.there were no such "bed and breakfast" houses in England
C.they found there were no free rooms there
D.people there were away on holiday
(4)If you see a road sign that says "DIVERSION" in England, you will
.
A.fall into a hole
B.have to take a different road

(5)When a Frenchman is offered more coffee and he says "Thank you",he really means

I had been in the city for some time and was coming home.I missed my boat and decided to travel on an old ship.I knew that it would not be a comfortable journey but I had no time to wait for another boat.
Hardly had we left the port when I saw the dog Gulliver, the captain's favourite dog,for the first time. What a big dog it was!I had never seen one that could frighten me so much!
On the third day the ship caught fire.Nobody tried to put it out.The ship began sinking and all the men rushed to the lifeboats.I saw no chance of getting away in a boat.Suddenly I remembered there was a life raft(橡皮救生筏) on the ship.I had no time,so I immediately rushed towards the raft and pushed it into the water.
In jumping down onto the raft I hurt myself badly and was unconscious for some time. When I came to,I found there was no sign of a lifeboat.Every man who had been on board the ship must have gone down with her.I was the only one who was saved.
Then I saw Gulliver was coming fast towards the raft.It struggled a long time before it managed to get onto the raft.I wanted to push it back into the water but did not dare to move. The dog shook itself, went to the other end of the raft and lay down.I did not dare to sleep that night.I must watch it.In the moonlight I could see its eyes were open.It was watching, too.

The most frightening words in the English language are "Our computer is down".You hear it more and more when you are on business.
The other day I was at the airport waiting for a ticket to Washington and the girl in the ticket office said, "I'm sorry,I can't sell you a ticket. Our computer is down."
"If your computer is down, just write me out a ticket."
"I can't write you out a ticket. The computer is the only one allowed to do so."
I looked down on the computer and every passenger was just standing there drinking coffee and staring at the black screen. Then I asked her, "What do all your people do?"
"We give the computer the information about your trip, and then it tells us whether you can fly with us or not."
"So when it goes down, you go down with it."
"That's right,sir."
"How long will the computer be down?" I wanted to know.
"I have no idea.Sometimes it's down for 10 minutes, sometimes for two hours. There's no way we can find out without asking the computer, and since it's down it won't answer us."
After the girl told me they had no backup (備用) computer,I said, "Let's forget the computer. What about your planes? They're still flying, aren't they?"
"I couldn't tell without asking the computer."
"Maybe I could just go to the gate and ask the pilot if he's flying to Washington," I suggested.
"I wouldn't know what gate to send you to.Even if the pilot was going to Washington,he couldn't take you if you didn't have a ticket."
"Is there any other airline flying to Washington within the next few hours?"
"I wouldn't know," she said, pointing at the dark screen. "Only 'IT' knows. 'IT' can't tell me."
By this time there were quite a few people standing in lines. The word soon spread to other travelers that the computer was down. Some people went white;some people started to cry and still others kicked their luggage.
(1)What could the girl in the ticket office do for the passengers without asking the computer?
