In the course of working my way through school,I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of these jobswas as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was hard;the pay was poor;and, most of all,the workingconditions were terrible.
First of all,the job made huge demands on my strength. For then hours a night,I took boxes that rolled down ametal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice.I once figured outthat I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night.
I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor.I was paid the lowest wage of that time—two dollars an hour.Because of the low pay,I felt eager to get as much as possible.I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $100 a week.
But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions.
During work I was limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading trucks with those heavy boxes in near-zero-degree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice, which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left,I had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.
I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked.By the time I left,I was determined never to go back there again.

  • 1.Scientists have already studied how dogs respond to people's behavior and speech. But researchers are just scratching the surface of human-cat interactions.House cats do appear to respond to the expressions on people's faces.Cats can also tell different human voices. But can cats recognize their own names?
Saito,a psychologist at Sophia University in Tokyo, and her colleagues decided to find the answer. They asked the owners of 77 cats to say four nouns of similar length followed by the cat's name.Cats gradually lost interest in each random(隨機(jī)的)noun. But when the owner said a cat's name, the cats reacted strongly. They moved their ears, head or tail, changed their back paw's position. And,of course, they miaowed.
These findings mean that cats join the ranks of animals that have shown some sort of response in experiments to the names people give them. Those animals include dogs, dolphins, apes and parrots. Some dogs, for example, can tell the difference between hundreds of human words. It's hard to compare the number of words across species, though.
The study makes a strong case that cats are perfectly capable of recognizing their own names.Getting a treat or hug as a reward is part of how cats learn to recognize a name. However, owners may also use their cat's name in a negative setting, like yelling at Fluffy to get off the stove. As a result, cats can probably learn to associate these familiar utterances with good and bad experiences,Saito notes. And that might not be great for human-cat relations. So only using a cat's name in a positive context and using a different term in a negative context could help cats and humans communicate more clearly.
So cats may recognize their names. But will they come when called?Don't get your hopes up.

(1)What made cats react strongly according to Saito's study?

    A.Their owners.
    B.Their own names.
    C.A random noun.
    D.A delicious meal.

C.scientists know how to tell the difference between animals

A.Giving a treat or hug as a reward.
B.Calling their name in a positive context.
C.Using a different term in a negative setting.
D.Associating their name with bad experiences.

  • 2.Humans are naturally drawn to other life forms and the worlds outside of our own.We take delight in the existence of creatures and even whole societies beyond our everyday lives.
This sense of wonder is universal.Look at the efforts that scientists have made to find out whether life of some kind exists on Mars, and the popularity of fantasy literature or movies like The Lord of the Rings. This sense of wonder draws us to each other,to the world around us,and to the world of make-believe.But have we gone so far in creating worlds of fantasy that we are missing the pleasure of other worlds that already exist all around us?
Human beings,as biologists have suggested, possess an inborn desire to connect with and understand other life forms. However, people, especially in big cities, often lead rather isolated lives. In a study of British schoolchildren,it was found that children by age eight were much more familiar with characters from television shows and video games than with common wildlife.Without modern technology,a small pond could be an amazing world filled with strange and beautiful plants, insects, birds, and animals. When we lack meaningful interaction(交互) with the world around us,and sometimes even with our families and friends,we seek to understand and communicate with things that exist only in our imaginations or on a computer screen.
The world of make-believe is not necessarily bad.But when the world of fantasy becomes the only outlet(出路) for our sense of wonder, then we are really missing something. We are missing a connection with the living world.Other wonderful worlds exist all around us.But even more interesting is that if we look closely enough,we can see that these worlds,in a broad sense, are really part of our own.

(1)The popularity of The Lord of the Rings proves

A.the close connection between man and the fantasy world
B.the wonderful achievements of fantasy literature
C.the fine taste of moviegoers around the world
D.the general existence of the sense of curiosity
(2)What can we infer from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3?

A.People are far less familiar with the world of fantasy.
B.The world around us could serve as a source of wonder.
C.The world of fantasy can be mirrored by a small and lively pond.
D.Modern technology prevents us from developing our sense of wonder.
(3)If our sense of wonder relies totally on the world of make-believe,we will

A.fail to appreciate the joy in our lives
B.be confused by the world of make-believe
C.miss the chance to recognize the fantasy world
D.be trapped by other worlds existing all around us
(4)What is the main purpose of the passage?

A.To show us the hidden beauty in our world.
B.To warn us not to get lost in the fantasy world.
C.To argue against the misuse of the sense of wonder.
D.To discuss the influence of the world of make-believe.

  • 3.Satellites are an important part of our ordinary lives. For example, the information for weather forecasts is sent by satellites. Some satellites have cameras which take photographs of the earth to show how clouds are moving.Satellites are also used to connect our international phone calls.
Computer connections of the World Wide Web and Internet also use satellites. Many of our TV programs come to us through satellites.Airplane pilots also sometimes use a satellite to help them find their exact location.
We use satellites to send television pictures from one part of the world to another. They are usually 35,880 kilometers above the equator.Sometimes we can see a satellite in the sky and it seems to stay in the same place. This is because it is moving around the world at 11,000 kilometers an hour-exactly the same speed as the earth rotates(旋轉(zhuǎn))at.A satellite must orbit the earth with its antennae (天線(xiàn))facing the earth.Sometimes,it moves away from its orbit. So there are little rockets on it which are used to put the satellite back in the right position. This usually happens about every five or six days.
Space is not empty!Every week, more and more satellites are sent into space to orbit the earth.A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years.Satellites which are broken are sometimes repaired by astronauts or sometimes brought back to the earth to be repaired.Often, very old or broken satellites are left in space to orbit the earth for a very long time. This is very serious because some satellites use nuclear power and they can crash into each other.

(1)What does the underlined word "This" in the 3rd paragraph refer to?

    A.A satellite.
    B.A little rocket.
C.A satellite seems to stay in the same place in the sky.
D.The satellite puts the rockets in the right position.
    (2)Which is true of satellites?

A.A satellite usually works for about 10-12 years.
B.Every time a satellite gets broken,it is brought back to the earth to be repaired.
C.A broken satellite is never left in space.
D.They often crash into each other.
(3)Which of the following is NOT done by satellites according to the passage?

    A.Sending information for weather forecasts.
    B.Taking photographs of the earth.
    C.Sending TV pictures.
    D.Providing food for airplane pilots.
(4)What's the speed the earth rotates at?

    A.35,880 kilometers per hour.
    B.335,880 kilometers per hour.
    C.11,000 kilometers per hour.
    D.110,000 kilometers per hour.
