In 2018,Sam Taylor came across a note in the window of an empty shop, asking locals what they would like to see in the space.Taylor found an envelope, wrote that he would open a bookshop and slid it through the door.He received a call soon after. After careful consideration,Taylor and his wife Jessica Paul drew up a business plan and opened their bookshop. "The community supported the bookshop that was here before,so we knew that it could work," said Taylor.
Given that prices are lower online, are people turning back to independent bookshops? "Having had a bookstore here and lost it,the locals really know the importance of an independent bookshop and what it brings to the community.I think it makes people stop and think:'Actually I'm going to support my local shop and this will improve our community as a whole,'" said Jessica.
"The threat of e-books and e-readers exists, but bookshop owners don't necessarily consider them direct competition. We want people to know that bookshops aren't highbrow (學(xué)術(shù)性的) places to visit. There's just no comparison to holding and smelling a book.Books are collectable things to have and keep, " said Emily Ross, another bookstore owner.
Since 1995 the number of independent bookstores has dropped sharply due to the rise of e-books and e-readers.However,the sales of e-readers and e-books have slowed many years later, with the latter dropping by 17 percent in 2016 alone.Since 2016,independent bookstores have been popular. It is possible that people decide that they've already spent long enough staring at screens and then have no interest in doing anything else in front of a screen.By contrast, there was a 31 percent increase in the sales of hardback books (精裝書)in 2017.
(1)4.What most probably drove Taylor to open a bookshop?
A.His wife's dream to own a bookshop.
B.His wish to continue the tradition of the UK.
C.His recognition of the locals' love for a bookshop.
D.His wish to develop young people's interest in reading.
(2)What did Emily Ross think of e-books and e-readers?
A.They should not exist.
B.They present no competition.
C.They don't provide something highbrow.
D.They won't replace independent bookstores.
(3)Why did e-readers and e-books face fallen sales in 2016?
A.They resulted in poor memory.
B.Some of them were of poor quality.
C.They offered fewer services than bookshops.
D.Much screen time might cause people's tiredness.
(4)What is the text mainly about?
A.The number of the UK's independent bookstores rises again.
B.The UK's independent bookshops are facing serious threat.
C.E-books and e-readers face more competition now.
D.People tend to buy books in bookshops in the UK.

3.
I was trained as a gymnast in Hunan,China,in the 1970s.The government wanted to transfer(轉(zhuǎn)學(xué))me to a school for athletes while my parents wanted me to become an engineer, because they firmly believed there was only one sure way to happiness:a safe and well-paid job.
But my dream was to become a Chinese opera singer.Although I tried everything I could to go to opera school,I knew I was too old to be trained and my dream would never come true.
But that's so unfair. So I was determined to find another calling - books.I satisfied my hunger for parental advice from the Fu Lei's Family Letters by Fu Lei and Zhu Meifu, found my role model of an independent woman from Jane Eyre, learned to be efficient from Cheaper by the Dozen, and inspired myself to study abroad after reading Complete Works of Sanmao and Lessons from History.
I came to the U.S.jye.ai 1995 where I started comparative reading.Comparing and contrasting give scholars a more complete understanding of a topic. So I thought, well,if comparative reading works for research, why not do it in daily life too?So I started reading books in pairs. They can be about people who are involved in the same event - Benjamin Franklin by Walter Isaacson and John Adams by David McCullough, for example,or friends with shared experiences.I also compare the same stories in different genres or similar stories from different cultures,as Joseph Campbell did in his wonderful book The Power of Myth.
Books have given me a magic portal (入口) to connect with people of the past and the present.I have come to believe that coming true is not the only purpose of a dream. Its most important purpose is to get us in touch with where dreams come from, where passion comes from and where happiness comes from.Even a shattered(遭受極大打擊的)dream can do that for you.So may books be always with you.
(1)What's the purpose of paragraph 1?
A.To provide background information.

(2)From which book did the author get the motivation to study abroad?
A.Fu Lei's Family Letters.
B.Jane Eyre.
C.Cheaper by the Dozen.
D.Complete Works of Sanmao.
(3)What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.The future of comparative reading.
B.The concept of comparative reading.
C.The writer's experiences of comparative reading.
D.The writer's achievements of comparative reading.
(4)What is the best title for the text?
A.How I Chase My Dreams
B.How Books Open My Mind
C.Why I Am Keen on Comparative Reading
D.Why a Shattered Dream Changes My Life
