  • 1.Do We Really Need Smart Cities?
Cities around the world are racing to become "smart".It's just like a classroom full of hard-working students.Take Toronto,Canada, for example.Technology (Tech) company Google has made a 1,500-page plan. It's going to remake two neighborhoods with things like snow-melting (融雪的) roads.
To build smart cities,we need lots of new technologies, such as robots and artificial intelligence (AI).These technologies will lead to safer and more efficient cities. However, they will also raise questions about privacy (隱私).
But there is a more serious problem:Smart cities will be difficult to manage.
As we know all too well from our personal lives, sometimes tech products are not dependable. The Internet and our computers break down regularly.Tech products also age quickly.Only a few years into their lives, problems may become more and more common.
In smart cities, many basic systems and services, such as water services, are based on such tech products. What if they break down regularly? Can you imagine the result?
New technologies in 2020 will be outdated before 2025.If we use smart technologies widely in cities,we will need to be prepared to replace them every few years. But who would want to pay this bill?
The most important problem is whether having a smart city will make us better at solving city problems.Smart technologies can't solve problems on their own.Suppose AI programs discover a road that needs to be repaired. It still requires people to do the job, doesn't it?
As an engineer,I think smart technologies should have a place in cities. However, that place is not everywhere. For many of our city problems,we don't really need the latest technologies. The best of the old ideas work better.

  • 2.Did you know that humans haven't walked on the moon surface(月球表面)since 1972?People are planning to send astronauts to the moon again, and finally to the Mars. The long-term space travel is possible in the near future. But it is dangerous. We have plenty of technology for safely exploring(探索)space.Do we really need to send people? Here are some students' opinions.
We still need to send humans into space. If we don't solve the problem of climate change, the planet could become not fit to live in.We need to find out whether living on Mars is possible. The robotic mission(使命)is to send back a lot of information. But it won't be enough to help us understand how we would face on another planet.
    --Elisha Lee,11,Wilmette,Illinois.
As a future engineer,I believe in space technology.Robots can stay in space longer and robots' lives are not at risk. They could stay on the moon or Mars for many years, doing research, with no danger to human life.
--Lino Marrero,15,F(xiàn)risco.Texas. Humans should continue going to space.Robots can collect information, but they can't respond(反應(yīng)靈敏)like humans in all situations. We couldn't depend on them to develop an area that would be dangerous for humans.
--Kellen Bhatt,11,Alpharetta,Georgia. We should not send humans into space,at least not now.Sending humans into space needs a lot of money. The same money could be used for solving problems on Earth.I'm not saying that space exploration should never happen. But for now,we should focus on dealing with the problems we have on Earth.
