試題詳情
About 400 pounds of food is wasted per day from 5 pm to 8 pm in Douglass Dining Hall. "We scrape(刮掉) the food from the conveyor belt into the buckets by hand.Working for Dining Team Green,I don't expect to basically become a garbage girl," Roll said. "We do the work because we care much about it.We all have a responsibility to take care of the environment. "
To have more approachable composting(把……制成堆肥) machines on campus,Roll now has a new sustainable project investing in Lomi,an automated compost machine. "I learned about Lomi through an ad," Roll said. "Funny enough,I just saw it and thought it perfect. It really interested me how the mechanism worked. "
Lomi is a new technology that can break down food waste into natural compost.According to Roll,it breaks down waste in the way:grinding(碾碎) the food into plant fertilizer.Unlike most composting machines,Omi can compost animal products, such as small bones.Another huge benefit is that it doesn't have smell and can convert waste to compost in a shorter time.
Roll plans on using the compost in the Gilbert community garden so that Dining Team Green can give back to the community. "It's very exciting to see our food waste that would otherwise have gone in the trash and pollute the environment go to our community," she said.
Roll is excited to introduce a new form of composting to the residents. She hopes that this machine will inspire other composting machines in all residential buildings. "I want Lomi not only to be a way to reduce food waste on the floor, but an educational tool to make people compost in a real way and not just talk about it in a theoretical sense," Roll said.

D.The advantages of Lomi.
(3)What may be Roll's expectation?
A
A
A.More people will get involved in composting initiatives.
B.Dining Team Green will become an educational tool.
C.More developed composting machines will be invented.
D.Dining Team Green will build community gardens.
(4)What can we know about Roll?

Trees, some of the tallest in the world, towered above Hannah Griffiths and her colleagues each morning as they walked deep into the rainforest in the Maliau Basin in Borneo, where they had set up a set of experiments to look at the ecological effects of small creatures:termites (白蟻).
Termites get
a bum rap
.They make headlines for chewing up billions of dollars of property each year in the US.And they are responsible for something like two percent of global carbon emissions, simply as a result of their huge populations and preference for chewing through carbon-rich materials.A whole industry is aiming at killing them.
But they play a key role in many natural ecosystems.Scientists have known for years that in tropical (熱帶的) forests, termites chew up fallen leaves and dead wood, keeping the fallen material under control and letting nutrients from the dead material back into the system to be used by other plants, insects, and animals. But they didn't know exactly how important the insects were in keeping the forest healthy and functional,so they removed termites from a particular spot in the forest and saw how it responded.
As luck would have it,Hannah Griffiths and her colleagues started their experiment when the forest was hit by an extreme drought.During the non-drought years, they saw there wasn't much difference between the normal plots and the ones where they'd removed the termites. But during the drought, the effects were marked. What they found was unexpected:in the termite-rich areas, the soil stayed slightly wet, more tree seedlings sprouted(抽芽),and the system was full of activity despite the long, hard dry spell.
For Griffiths,it was only because they happened to study the drought that they could pick out the real importance of termites to the system, she points out."And that rings alarm bells in my head," she says,"because it makes me think, well, what else don't we know?If we start damaging biological communities,we don't know what that will do."
(1)Which of the following best explains "a bum rap" underlined in Paragraph 2?
A.Unfair blame.
B.Wide popularity.
C.Public attention.
D.Special preference.
(2)What have scientists learned about termites?
A.They do serious harm to tropical rainforests.
B.They contribute a lot to the ecosystem they live in.
C.They act as food for other plants, insects and animals.
D.They speed up the loss of nutrition in the rainforest.
(3)What can we infer from the finding of Griffiths' experiment?
A.Termites help rainforests survive climate change.
B.Termites prefer drought years to non-drought ones.
C.Termites benefit more from the forest during the drought.
D.Termites enjoy eating tree seedlings during the drought.
(4)What does Griffiths tell us in the last paragraph?
A.Termites are now in danger of extinction.
B.Termites damage biological communities.
C.We should think twice before damaging a species.
D.We should study the drought to improve the system.

I'm in the area of Noailles in Marseille,F(xiàn)rance's second largest city and its main trade seaport. Some small shops sell vegetables, meat, and,it seems, all the spices of the Middle East.In addition to French, languages spoken on the busy streets include Arabic and African French. It all adds up to one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Europe.
Close to the downtown street,I discover an Algerian restaurant, whose owner makes his signature dish—couscous with barley, not the usual wheat, using a recipe that hasn't changed since the 1920s.Couscous is an necessary part of Marseille culture. The dish was added to the UNESCO's Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020.
To be honest, before I travelled here, couscous had not been the first meal that came to mind when I thought of Marseille. It was bouillabaisse, the rich soup with olive oil, garlic and saffron.I imagined enjoying it at a small portside cafe. This was clearly a romantic fantasy. For one thing, there are no small cafcs at historic city. For another, the restaurants do serve bouillabaisse, but when I see the price at one place I am shocked:69 euros! No bowl of soup should cost that much.
I give up and end up two streets away from the old harbor in a new restaurant,Ourea. For 28 euros,Chef Matthieu Roche serves a three-course lunch that includes tuna steaks and couscous.
More and more young, talented people are discovering that Marseille is an ideal place to live. There is also a growing number of Parisians moving here every year.Tired of the rush and expense of life in larger cities, the newcomers come looking for the more relaxed Mediterranean way of life.
Walking through these contrasting neighborhoods of Marseille.I think about the distinct communities here living in the same neighborhoods- together, side,by,side, but not mixed. They may also feel they are Marseillais first regardless of nationalities.
(1)Which word can best describe Marseille according to the first paragraph?
A.Remote.
B.Commercial.
C.Industrial.
D.Inland.
(2)What made the author leave the Algerian restaurant?
A.The unreasonable charge.
B.The unbearable flavor.
C.The unsatisfying service.
D.The noisy atmosphere.
(3)Why do the newcomers choose Marseille rather than other big cities?
A.To make a fortune.
B.To experience a dish.
C.To learn a language.
D.To live a leisurely life.
(4)In which column of a magazine can we probably read the text?
A.Fashion.
B.Food.
C.Trade
D.Travel.
