Louis Druehl is sailing his boat along Bamfield,a coastal community in British Columbia,Canada. For 51 years, the boat has taken him to Kelp Bay.There, seaweed (海草) is growing under the water's surface (表面).
Known as the Kelp Grandfather,Druehl began growing kelp,a kind of seaweed,in 1982.He has studied it,planted it,cooked it and written a' prize-winning book about it.He thinks more people should learn about its advantages.
As climate (氣候) change influences the planet, the world is turning to seaweed as a possible solution. It's used to produce recyclable plastic. It helps the ocean's ecosystem (生態(tài)系統(tǒng)) remain balanced and it takes in CO2.
People think of forests as the best way to deal with climate change. But some researchers say seaweed is a better way.Unlike tee, seaweed doesn't need fertilizers (化肥) or fresh water. It grows faster than trees do.And it doesn't require any land. "When we're planting trees,we need to make sure they don't take away that land from food production," said Katie Lebling,a researcher.
Seaweed could also become a kind of food.Could seaweed farms provide enough protein (蛋白質(zhì)) for the world?Carlos Duarte,a leading seaweed scientist at the Red Sean Research Center in Saudi Arabian, thinks so. "When you lo at how we are going to fed the world's population in 2050,in a way that doesn't harm the environment, there is only one pathway," he says, "Seaweed farming."
In the past ten years or so,seaweed farming has become popular in British Columbia.Theresa long line of seaweed farmers waiting to learn from the Kelp Grandfather.
