  • 1.A very old man went to live with his son,daughter-in-law,and a four-year-old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was not clear, and his step became weaker. The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult.Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth. The son and the daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess."We must do something about Grandfather," said the son."I've had enough of his spilt milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor." So the husband and the wife set a small table in the corner. There,Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the dinner table.Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two,his food was served in a wooden bowl.Sometimes when the family glanced at Grandfather,he had tears in his eyes as he ate alone.Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp(嚴(yán)厲的)when he dropped a fork or spilt food. The four-year-old boy watched it all in silence.
One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps(碎片)on the floor. He asked the child sweetly,"What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded,"Oh,I am making little bowls for you and Mum to eat your food in when I grow up." The four-year-old boy smiled and went back to work. The words struck the parents so they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks.Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done. That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table.
Let us all be wise builders and role models.Take care of yourself and those you love today, and every day!

  • 2.It amazed me-every time I saw Joe he was smiling. It didn't matter whether he had to stop at a stop light,or if he was the seventh person in line at the bank, and the teller(出納員)ended her job just before he got there.Joe always smiled. It made me wonder why he always seemed so happy.
Having observed Joe with other people,I noticed something else too.Joe asked people how they were doing, and really seemed to listen to their answers. He showed pity to someone who was hurting, and had kind words, and offered to help in any way he could.
It made me think what if I tried to smile more?An experiment began when I went to the supermarket.I smiled as I went up and down the supermarket and people I didn't even know smiled back at me.Some even spoke! The little kid in the cart who was giving his mother a hard time saw me smile;he stopped talking and then made a shy attempt at a smile. The man in the cart for the disabled needed help to reach for something, and I got it for him.The smile even transferred(轉(zhuǎn)移)over to him,and he thanked me.
As I drove home,I was smiling. Now I know a smile is a small thing, but what if we all try to smile a few more times each day?I couldn't believe how great I felt.Nothing in my life had changed, but maybe it had. What I had learned was that such a small thing could lift not only my spirits, but also the spirits of those around me.So smile!

(1)What do we know about Joe from Paragraph 2?

A.He has nothing to worry about.
B.He lives a very hard life.
C.He is kind and ready to help others.
D.He often asks others to smile.
(2)What experiment did the writer do?

A.He smiled at others in the supermarket.
B.He bought people things in the supermarket.
C.He helped anyone who needed help.
D.He said kind words to others.
(3)According to the passage, how was the writer's experiment?

    A.It was a failure.
    B.It proved nothing.
    C.It was unacceptable.
    D.It was quite satisfying(令人滿意的).
(4)The writer wrote this passage most probably to
    .
    A.explain why people smile
    B.tell us something about Joe
C.tell us the true meaning of life
D.suggest people smile more to others

  • 3.The Most Beautiful Heart One day a young man declared that he had the most beautiful heart in the world.A large crowd flocked to admire his heart for it was perfect. There was not a flaw(瑕疵)in it.
Suddenly,an old man appeared and said,"Why,your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine."
The crowd and the young man looked at the old man's heart. It was full of scars. It had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces put in,but they didn't fit quite right, and there were several pointed edges. In fact,in some places there were deep holes where whole pieces were missing.
The young man laughed."Comparing your heart with mine, mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars."
"Yes," said the old man."Yours looks perfect, but I would never trade with you.You see, every scar represents a person to whom I have given my love.I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they give me a piece of their heart that fits into the empty place in my heart.
But because the pieces aren't exact,I have some rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of the love we shared.
Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away, and the other person hasn't returned a piece of his or her heart to me.These are the empty holes - giving love is taking a chance.
Although these cuts are painful and stay open,it reminds me of the love I have for those people too,and I hope someday they may return and fill the space. So now do you see what true beauty is?"
The young man walked up to the old man, reached into his perfect heart, and ripped a piece out.He offered it to the old man.
The old man placed it in his heart, then took a piece from his old scarred heart and placed it in the wound in the young man's heart. It fit,but not perfectly,as there were some rough edges.
The young man looked at his heart, not perfect any more but more beautiful than ever, since love from the old man's heart flowed into his.
They embraced and walked away side by side.

(1)The young man laughed at the old man in the beginning because he thought
    .
A.his own heart was perfect while the old man's ugly
B.the old man was silly enough to misunderstand him
C.young people should have a more beautiful heart
D.he could command instant respect from the crowd
(2)Why wouldn't the old man trade his heart with the young man's?

A.He had exchanged his heart with somebody else.
B.The young man refused to help people in need.
C.He had a heart full of love shared with others.
D.The young man was too vain to gain his trust.
(3)The missing pieces in the old man's heart meant
    .
A.some people helped by the old man forgot to pay him
B.giving love sometimes involved risks and hurt
C.people who shared love should be grateful
D.we should love a person without hurting ourselves
(4)What made the young man feel his heart more beautiful than ever in the end?

A.The moving story told by the old man.
B.His fresh understanding of true beauty.
C.Making good friends with the old man at last.
D.The flowing love from the old man's heart into his.
