2.When ten-year-old Reese Osterberg lost her Fresno County,California, home to one of the largest wildfires in state history early last fall, she had a very pressing concern:did anyone grab her baseball cards?
No one had. With a houseful of kids and dogs and a farm's worth of horses to withdraw, the family forgot the cards during the stress.Naturally, the big San Francisco Giants fan was upset. When she watched the Giants on TV,she would lay out each player's card on the floor in his corresponding field position. "I like baseball cards because they are pictures of people doing happy stuff—doing what they love, and what I love." said Reese.
Reese's loss touched the hearts of the Fresno County fire department, which posted her story on its Facebook page with a request to help Reese restore her baseball card collection. That,in turn, touched the heart of Kevin Ashford.
Ashford knew exactly where Reese could find replacement cards:in his garage. He had more than 25,000 in his collection, with an exact value of $35,000 to $50,000.Ashford had been thinking about selling them when he saw the fire department's post. "I wasn't really doing anything with them," said Ashford, "I thought I could take care of this problem rather quickly."
First volunteers transported the cards from Ashford's garage to theirs and then surprised Reese during a tour of the firehouse.Towers of Ashford's cards were piled in front of the fire engine. After thanking Ashford,Reese was quick to share the thousands of baseball cards she received from Ashford and donors around the country with other kids affected by California's Creek Fire.
She's gotten so many,in fact, that she started Cards From Reese,an organization that collects cards and donates them to those in need.

A.They were worth a lot of money.

3.Being taken off the endangered species list doesn't guarantee a carefree future for whales.Recent research estimates that the population of Pacific gray whales off North America's West Coast has dwindled by almost a quarter since 2016.Starting in 2019,alarming numbers of dead gray whales were spotted on beaches and floating offshore throughout their habitat, from Mexico to Alaska. The National Marine Fisheries Service defined it as an "Unusual Mortality Event".UMEs are declared when a "significant die-off" occurs and when information is collected to clarify why it occurs.
The Arctic has historically low levels of sea ice in recent years, upending the delicate ecosystem that sustains gray whales.Like other migrators, they don't feed on their winter breeding (繁殖) grounds or along their migration, and must gain weight during the summer to sustain themselves through the rest of the year.Observers using air photography noted the whales looked skinnier and arrived in Mexico in poor condition, which suggested they were not finding enough food during the summer.
This die-off is alarmingly similar to the events of 20 years ago when another UME resulted in a significant drop in the gray whale population.Although the cause was ultimately undetermined,it's thought that the population reached "carrying capacity"—it grew too large for the environment to support it.Although that idea has been suggested for this die-off as well,it's more likely blamed on the changing conditions of the Arctic.
Gray whales hunted almost to extinction by the mid-20th century, were one of the first to be protected from hunting. The Eastern North Pacific population rebounded without pressure from whaling and was taken off the Endangered Species List;the Western North Pacific population is still listed as endangered. This die-off is a reminder that "delisting" doesn't indicate a population's secure future.New threats arise, climate change upends habitats, and continued monitoring is needed in case a crash comes.
(1)What does the underlined word "dwindled" in paragraph I mean?
A.increased
B.bounced
C.multiplied
D.dropped
(2)What will gray whales usually do in winter?
A.Consume few calories.
B.Travel south to breed.
C.March back to Alaska.
D.Seek food in the Arctic.
(3)What might be the main cause of the current UME?
A.Serious illnesses.
B.Sea pollution.
C.Environmental changes.
D.Limited carrying capacity.
(4)What's the author's attitude to the "delisting"?
A.Favorable.
B.Concerned.
C.Intolerant.
D.Regretful.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.5 -
4.It's a common occurrence:You sit down to study and find yourself thinking about a friend,dinner-anything but your upcoming test. Our minds wander.A lot. That new train of thought has been tied to creativity. But some minds get stuck, focused on the same thoughts over and over.A new study finds that patterns of electrical activity in the brain track different types of thoughts. This is the first-time scientists have tied the brain's activity to our thought patterns.
The study hired 39 young adults to come into a lab, where they wore a sensor-lined cap that detects brainwaves in the area below. While wearing the cap, each participant sat at a computer. An arrow appeared on the screen, pointing either right or left. When it did, they had to press the matching arrow on the keyboard. If that sounds like a simple task,it was.And that was intentional. The researchers wanted the participants to do a task that allowed their minds to wander.
At the end of the task, researchers asked the participants what their thoughts were doing as they completed the task. Were they focused on the task? Were their thoughts wandering freely? Were they deliberately focusing on some topic?Or were their thoughts stuck on one specific thing? That last type is one that doesn't easily go away.Such thoughts might include worrying about a family member or replaying an argument with a friend.
When the researchers matched up different thought.jye.ai to specific brain activities, they found a clear connection. That was especially true in a part of the brain right behind the forehead. This frontal lobe(額葉)is linked to attention, memory and problem-solving.But stronger alpha waves in this region did not indicate people focused their thoughts—either on the task or on something else.
"The alpha waves have been shown during creative processes as well," says Julia Kam,a cognitive neuroscientist. And in this study,"that's when thoughts jump from one thing to another.Such freely moving thoughts may be the key to creative problem-solving."
(1)What did the new study focus on?
A.How to solve problems quickly.
B.How to avoid absent-mindedness.
C.How brain activities are tied to thought patterns.
D.How the brain forms different types of thoughts.
(2)Why was the arrow task designed to be so easy for the participants?
A.To get a convincing study result.
B.To help them concentrate on the task.
C.To keep their brain open to other thoughts.
D.To ensure they would press correct arrows.
(3)What were the participants required to do at the end of the study?
A.Focus on some specific topics.
B.Press "Enter" on the keyboard.
C.Type their thoughts into the computer.
D.Answer the researchers' questions.
(4)Which pattern of thought is linked to strong alpha waves in the frontal lobe?
A.A wandering mind.
B.A focused mind.
C.A conscious mind.
D.A dull mind.組卷:28引用:2難度:0.4

24.Laurie's Skating Competition Laurie sat quietly in the empty dressing room at the ice-skating rink (溜冰場(chǎng)) .She had not been skating in any competition since her-left knee was badly injured in an accident six months ago.As she waited for her turn to skate,Laurie was very nervous. "If I can win today," she thought, "I can skate in the World Cup next year and then maybe I can make it to the Olympics."
Laurie was told that she had a tough competitor this year,a girl named Jinny Jordan who was really strong in everything. "She is the one you have to beat this year," said the coach.
Minutes later, the door swung open and Laurie saw a young woman who was about her own age.The young woman dropped her skating bag onto a chair. The bag fell to the floor with a thud(砰地一聲)."Hi,I'm Jinny Jordan," she said.
Laurie felt uncomfortable as she looked at Jinny. "So this is my competitor," thought Laurie. "Because of her,I may lose tonight."
"This costume(表演服)was my mom's idea," Jinny said, looking down at her red, white, and blue skating dress. "It looks like a flag."
Laurie couldn't keep from smiling. She pointed to Jinny's bag,"Some stuff fell out of your bag." Jinny looked down:As she began to gather her belongings, the door opened.
"Jinny," called someone, "You'd better give the music tape to the sound engineer right away."
"Oh,my God!I thought I had handed it in hours ago. It's a green box with my initials (姓名首字母) written on it." screamed Jinny, hurrying out.
Laurie knew that music was nearly as important to the program as the skating itself. If she lost her music tape, she might as well forget about skating Laurie stood up and walked to the chair to do a few more knee bends.
