Yesterday, after arriving in Madrid,I knocked on a stranger's door. "I searched on the website. Will you give me lessons?" I asked. This was the reason I'd come to Spain.Because I once believed I was meant to be a female flamenco (弗拉門戈) guitarist.
Forty - five years ago, when I was two,my father also came to Madrid and knocked on strangers' doors.A well - known classical guitarist,he admired flamenco a lot,and in Spain he learnt from anyone willing to teach him.He approached performers in bars, made friends with street musicians and managed to study with Paco de Lucia, the greatest flamenco guitarist of our time.
I started playing classical guitar when I was five.My father's hands exploded across the strings like fireworks.I practised while he instructed and criticized.I played till I had sharp pain in my fingertips.By age seven,I was called a child genius.
Then,at 11,I quit.Heartbroken,my father distanced himself.Guiltily,I followed suit.Soon we spoke only when necessary.Our relationship didn't
rebound
until,in my early 20s,I found myself pulled back to guitar.
When I was in my early 30s,he got sick. Before he died a few years later,my father told me there were almost no female flamenco guitarists in the world. If I kept practising,I could be one of the first.I promised, and he left me his guitar. But after he died,I couldn't bear to play it.He'd spent so much time with his arms around that instrument, and it seemed an extension of his own body.Holding it gave my grief an unbearable tangibility (可觸知).So for 13 years it sat mostly untouched, coming out only when my son Ellis begged to see it.He was careful with his grandfather's instrument in a way that made me want to pass it down to him — both the guitar and the music.Problem was,I couldn't really play anymore.
Now,Antonia is sitting with me in her living room, teaching me patiently.I have been here for only two days, and already my fingers hurt. It's a sharp pain, like when a fallen - asleep limb (肢體) returns to life. The feeling delights me.It means I'm doing something right.
(1)Which can best describe the father when he was learning flamenco?
A.Cautious.
B.Hopeless.
C.Depressed.
D.Devoted.
(2)Which has the similar meaning with the underlined word "rebound" in paragraph 4?
A.Improve.
B.Break.
C.Suffer.
D.Blossom.
(3)Why did the author leave the guitar untouched?
A.She intended to pass it down to her son.
B.It reminded her of her unpleasant past.
C.Deep sorrow drowned her at the sight of it.
D.Carrying it made her feel a sense of burden.
(4)Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Guitar Lessons From Strangers
B.Love for Father on the String Again
C.Adventures for Music Lovers in Spain
D.Journey to Success as a Flamenco Guitarist

The night is completely black. But the darkness of a hill inside the crater of Indonesia's Kawah Ijen Volcano is lit up like a holiday light show.Tourists gather at the volcano to see what look like glowing blue rivers of lava. But they aren't rivers of lava. They're rivers of glowing sulfur (硫磺).
Glowing red lava flowing from an erupting volcano isn't unusual.Glowing sulfur is.Hot,sulfur-rich gases escape constantly from fumaroles (噴氣孔) in Kawah Ijen's crater.Scientists were told that sulfur miners on the volcano sometimes use torches to light the sulfur. The blue flames make Kawah Ijen popular with tourists, who watch from a safe distance.
Sulfur is common in volcanic gas,and it can be used to produce many things. But it's so plentiful in Kawah Ijen's crater that miners make a dangerous daily journey into the crater to collect sulfur from a fumarole."The local people pipe the gases from the fumarole through pipes,"says scientist John Pallister. He has walked into the crater himself, wearing a gas mask for protection against the clouds of acid that rise from the lake."They use water from a spring to cool the pipes,"he says. This causes gases to change into liquid sulfur. The sulfur then cools and hardens into rock.Using this method, miners get more usable rock faster than if they just collect pieces.
Miners face another hazard:a huge eruption.Kawah ljen's last big eruption was almost 200 years ago,but the volcano is still active.Indonesian scientists want to find a way to predict a big eruption in time to keep everyone safe. But the deep acid lake makes it difficult to pick up the usual signals that warn of a coming volcanic eruption.
For example, certain gases are usually richer right before an eruption. But in this lake, those gases disappear into the deep water before they can register on the geologists' equipment.
As scientists search for ways to predict this unusual volcano's behavior,Kawah Ijen's blue fires continue to attract audiences who appreciate the volcano's amazing glow.
(1)What makes Kawah Ijen attractive to tourists?
A.Its special outline.
B.Its blue fire.
C.Its glowing red lava.
D.Its delightful scene in daylight.
(2)What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.The daily life of local miners.
B.The method of getting sulfur effectively.
C.The protection provided for Kawah Ijen.
D.The process of researching the inner part of the crater.
(3)What does the underlined word "hazard"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Danger.
B.Decision.
C.Direction.
D.Disappointment.
(4)What does the example in paragraph 5 show?
A.The advantage of scientists' equipment.
B.The working rules of scientists' research.
C.The difficulty of predicting a big eruption.
D.The necessity of patience in studying an eruption.

In the summer of 2010,the NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer started its voyage of exploration. The expedition was the combination of a long planning effort that involved high-level science, and technical leadership in the U.S.and Indonesia.Indonesia's land and shallow seas are rich with a diversity of marine life. What particularly intrigued the interests of both U.S.and Indonesian ocean scientists was to find out if Indonesia's deep seas, which are nearly unexplored, are really biologically diverse. The scientists worked out an exploration plan that they believed offered a high probability of finding never-before-seen ecosystems in the deep seas.
The expedition planning began with highly skilled mapping technicians working closely with the scientists to create a map of the area of interest.Using this map,the team could pick targets where active volcanoes were likely to be encountered.Once Okeanos Explorer reached the targets, her sonar mapping system was used to create more detailed maps of the exploration areas.
Once the map was completed, volcanic features were identified by the science team. The second stage of exploration consisted of steaming slowly over the areas. At the same time,a sensor package was repeatedly lowered and raised.Operated by a technician on the ship, the sensor provided real-time data that revealed whether or not there were heat and chemical plumes in the water column.
The third and final step of the exploration was then to use a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to start a near-bottom visual search for active venting. The ROV,Little Hercules, which was made state-of-the-art for this expedition, produced impressive HD video imagery of both the geology and biology of the dive sites after returning.
Despite all the technologies and methods, there's more to explore. It is through exploration that we obtain our fundamental knowledge and basic understanding of things and places previously unknown to us.
(1)What is the' purpose of the expedition mentioned in paragraph 1?
A.To promote the exchange between the U.S.and Indonesia.
B.To make a huge profit from exploring the Indonesian ocean.
C.To find out about the ecosystems of the Indonesian deep seas.
D.To raise public awareness of protecting the Indonesian deep seas.
(2)What was the first step of the expedition planning?
A.Picking out the positions of active volcanoes.
B.Working out a map of the exploration area.
C.Getting a rough idea of the exploration targets.
D.Identifying volcanic features by sonar systems.
(3)What can we learn about Little Hercules?
A.It was part of the sensor package.
B.It was specifically designed for this expedition.
C.It should be operated by a technician on the ship.
D.It aimed to collect data about heat and chemical plumes.
(4)Which of the following shows the organization of the text?
A.
B.
