  • 3.Last year,I worked as a young marketing person in a company. It was one of those busy days...management meetings, sale calls, planning my travels, booking hotels, and the list was endless.By the end of the day,I was not only tired but also was getting angry with myself and everyone around me.It was at this time that Paul invited me to his house for a "chill out".
Although tired,I was all excited to chat up with Paul and share and learn through his rich experience in marketing. As I entered through the main door to his house,Paul started singing a song:I have a dream,to help me through in everything...and so on.I was in no mood to listen to his song.I wanted to hear about how he dealt with sale calls.
As I was ready to tell him about just that,I was totally surprised at what I saw next. Two young girls, aged between 7 and 10,walked over to Paul from their bedrooms and hugged him. They couldn't walk steadily, and neither could they talk properly.Their faces were full of smiles when they heard the song.
Curious to know,I asked Paul who these girls were.I knew that Paul lived in that house but I had never seen these girls.Paul explained,"I also have dreamt a dream to make these girls happy. They are my daughters and they were born as special children." And he further added,"They don't have a mother. My wife died when they were very young" And he was both Mother and Father to these beautiful daughters.
I was moved to tears. In the office,no one knew what Paul was going through in his personal life.He never looked for any pity from his friends. In fact,he always helped us and encouraged us to move forward in life.

  • 5."What!You,too?I thought I was the only one." Have you ever said this to anyone? If so,you may have ended up becoming friends with this person.
It seems that similarity often helps form friendships. The Greek philosopher Aristotle once said, "Some people define 'friendship' as a matter of similarity, they say that we love those who are like ourselves."
Now,there is some science behind this idea.Scientists from University of California said friends have similar brains,Scientific American reported.
The scientists invited 42 university students to take part in an experiment. Each student watched the same set of videos, which included a comedy,a discussion and a soccer match.Meanwhile, the scientists studied their brains and recorded their brain activity.
According to their study, friends who watched the same video clips reacted in similar ways.Similar parts of their brains lit up while watching the videos, especially parts that are connected with motivation, learning and memory.
However, people who weren't friends had different reactions to the same clips.
Having close friends whose brains react like ours "may be rewarding because it makes one's own values, opinions, and interests strong",lead scientist Carolyn Parkinson told Business Insider.
But brain similarity is not the only thing that can result in friendship.Scientists from the University of Leipzig,Germany, found that friendship is also based on how physically close you are to someone.
They did an experiment with first-year college students who met in class for the first time.In this experiment, students who sat in neighboring seats were more likely to become friends.

A.they had watched the same video clips.
B.Friends had similar reactions to the same clips.
C.It's good to have friends who react similarly.
    D.Watching videos improves one's memory.
(4)According to the passage, what else may help build friendship?

    A.Being fun and helpful.
    B.Having similar appearances.
    C.Being physically close.
    D.Studying at the same college.
