Danny's grandfather loved to keep pigeons，and Goldie was one of them.Goldie had golden eyes，which was very rare in pigeons.Grandfather said he had never had a pigeon like her.
Goldie was a champion racing pigeon and had won loads of cups.But once，around the time Goldie was released two hundred miles away for a race，Danny's grandfather was hospitalized with a heart attack.The responsibility of waiting for Goldie and taking care of the other pigeons then fell on Danny.
However，Goldie did not fly back on time as usual.In order not to upset his grandfather，while visiting him that night with his parents，Danny lied that Goldie had already returned and won the first place."I knew it"，said Danny's grandfather，settling back on his pillows，"I always knew she was a winner.She's one in a million."Grandfather believed the lie.
Sometimes grandfather's racing pigeons got lost due to bad weather or got attacked by falcons（獵鷹）and never came back home，but those had never happened to Goldie.She always came home，right on time."Goldie must have been eaten by those falcons nesting in the quarry（采石場(chǎng)） on her way back home"，Danny thought to himself bitterly and his chest was burning.Danny swore to himself to take revenge."They are a threat，those falcons!I must get rid of them and pull down their nest."
It only took Danny five minutes to reach the quarry.Danny looked around the quarry walls and found their nest on a steepest side，which was a long way up.He climbed fast——there were old tree roots to grab hold of.His hands were bleeding.But he didn't feel the pain.He was hanging on the rock wall with his finger-tips like a starfish.His arms were so weak and trembling，but he was finally there.
