  • 3.You may know that a healthy diet is the key to a long life, from controlling weight to improving physical and mental health. But it has another advantage that you may not consider. It can reduce your carbon footprint, which is a measure of the amount of carbon dioxide produced of the by your activities, and slow the speed of climate change as well. That's the news from a new study,in which a team of researchers led by University of California,Santa Barbara examined of the possible environmental effects of healthier diets in the United States.
For their research, the scientists used data from previous analyses that looked at the effects of foods on diseases. They then compared data on healthier foods and data on less healthy foods to examine the effects of those changes on greenhouse gas emissions. The healthier diet changed about half the foods in a typical American diet, cutting the amount of red meat, and doubling fruit and vegetable intake (攝取量).
The results were shocking. For the health care system, the researchers found that healthier diets could reduce the risk of a few diseases like diabetes, colorectal cancer, and coronary heart disease by 20 to 40 percent, lower health care costs by ﹩77 billion annually, making it come down to ﹩93 billion, and also drop greenhouse gas emissions by 222 kilograms to 826 kilograms per person per year. It's no secret that food has an unbelievable influence on the environment. In fact,it's known to result in about 30 percent of total U.S,greenhouse gas emissions, with animal-based foods among the highest causes, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
You don't have to turn your diet upside down.Just lower your meat intake while upping your fruits and vegetables.Try small changes, like meatless Monday, which not only drops your cancer risk but also reduces your carbon footprint.

    C.Helping lose extra weight.
    D.Improving mental health.

    .
    A.diets and diseases
    B.diseases and health care
    C.foods and climate change
    D.human activity and the environment
(3)What can we know about the healthier diet in the new research?

    A.It has more red meat.
    B.It contains less dessert.
C.It includes more fruits and vegetables.
D.It's not quite different from a typical American diet.

  • 4.Most animals living in crowded conditions have particularly strong immune systems,so it long puzzled researchers that honeybees do not.
Part of the answer, discovered in 2015,is that queen bees vaccinate(接種疫苗)their eggs by moving parts of proteins from disease-causing pathogens(病原體)to them before they are laid. These act as antigens(抗原)to trigger the development of a protective immune response in the developing young. But that observation raises the question of how the queen receives her antigen supply in the first place?Dr Harwood wondered if the nurse bees were taking in parts of pathogens and passing them to royal jelly(蜂王漿)they were producing while eating the food brought to the hive(蜂巢).
To test this idea,he teamed up with a group at the University of Helsinki,in Finland, led by Dr Heli Salmela.Together, they collected about 150 nurse bees and divided them among six queenless mini hives equipped with baby bees to look after.Instead of honey, they fed the nurses on sugar water, and for three of the hives they added P.jye.ai,a bacterium causing a hive-killing disease,to the sugar water.
In this case,to stop such an infection happening,Dr Harwood and Dr Salmela heat-treated the pathogens and so killed them in advance. They also labelled the dead bacteria with a fluorescent dye(熒光染料),to track them easily. And,sure enough,it was confirmed that parts of P.jye.ai were getting into royal jelly released by those bees which had been fed with the sugar water containing that.
All told, these findings suggest that nurse bees are indeed, through their royal jelly, passing antigens onto the queen for vaccinating her eggs. They also mean the nurses are vaccinating baby bees as well, because baby bees, too, receive royal jelly for the first few days after they come out.

    A.Queen bees.
    B.Nurse bees.
    C.Bee eggs.
    D.Baby bees.
(3)Why was P.jye.ai added to the sugar water?

A.To test if it would cause a hive-killing disease.
B.To check how the bacterium would affect the hive.
C.To see whether the target bees would favor the taste.
D.To confirm the bees would pass pathogens to royal jelly.
(4)What is the text mainly about?

    A.How bees multiply.
    B.How antigens function.
    C.How bees get vaccinated.
    D.How immune system works.

You can tell this by cafés life.French cafés are always crowded.(5)
