29.Reflections of Hope in the Snowstorm As Christmas drew near,my husband Keith,a student at Utah State University, and I felt a growing desire to get together with my parents in Northern California, which is 800 miles away from where we lived here in Utah.Yet,we couldn't afford the long trip. Then arrived a most unexpected gift in a Christmas card:enough money for gas for the drive home.We were so excited.Keith took time off from his part-time job and we packed the car. With a good wish for safety and travelling conditions,we hit the road.
We drove all the way to the west coast of California.Everything went well and we finally made it to my childhood home.As Keith honked the horn to signal our arrival,my family rushed out to greet us,welcoming us with love and Christmas cheer. We celebrated Christmas together again for the first time in three years. My family rejoiced (欣喜) when we announced that we were expecting our second child in the spring.
All too soon, the time came for us to return. With tears and hugs,we started on our way.We had intended to drive to Keith's parents' home in Bountiful that night, where we could take a good rest. But the weather conditions started worsening toward evening.Frantic flurries of snow swirled (盤旋) wildly. We stopped and fueled up the car with the money given by my parents. We did not even consider staying overnight in a motel for the very little cash. When we drove into the darkening night, big snowflakes patted against our windshield.Keith was having trouble seeing the road,as the headlights seemed dim (模糊的).He pulled over, and got out to brush the snow away from them. That was when he found we had only one headlight on.
We had no choice but to head slowly out onto the nearly deserted freeway. Our car bravely struggled through the snowy darkness. We desperately tried to keep our eyes on the white line in the road, but it was disappearing quickly in the piling snow.We seemed to be all alone on that dark stretch of freeway. There was no traffic in either direction, and the visibility was near zero.
Suddenly,out of nowhere,a semi-truck (半拖車) passed by.
To signal our gratitude,Keith blinked our one headlight at the semi-truck driver in front of us.組卷:1引用:1難度:0.3
