  • 12.I live in Xizhou in Yunnan Province,on the historic Tea Horse Road.I have to admit that when I first heard that Paul Salopek was going to walk the entire globe on his own two feet,I was blown away.I couldn't imagine that there could be such an unusual person in the world.
Last May,I met Paul.He told me that it was his first time in China. He talked to me with great excitement about the history, migrations, and discoveries in my region of China. He spoke of the Shu-Yandu Dao(the Southern Silk Road),the travels of the 17th-century Chinese explorer Xu Xiake, the Tea Horse Road and the early 20th-century American botanist Joseph Rock.He also talked of Xuanzang.Paul considered many of them heroes and in a sense Chinese pioneers of slow journalism.
I decided to accompany Paul on his walk toward Yunnan. On September 28,2021,we set out.Our days were simple:walk, eat, sleep, and repeat. We woke up at sunrise, set off in high spirits, and rested at sunset, dragging ourselves into exhausted sleep.
We met many people on the road. Some were curious, surrounding us and watching us;some gave us directions;some invited us into their home to take a rest;some spoke of the charm of their hometown. We met many beautiful souls, simple souls and warm souls. We were walking with our minds.
Together,we were impressed by the biodiversity of the Gaoligong Mountains. As I walked on ancient paths through mountains,I seemed to hear the antique voices of past travelers urging me to be careful on the road.
Looking back on the more than 200 miles I walked with Paul,I came to a realization.Walking for its own sake, while healthy and admirable,is only a small part of the benefit of moving with our feet.A deeper reward is rediscovering the world around us,shortening the distance between each other, and sharing each other's cultures.

(1)How did the writer first respond to Paul's travel plan?

    A.Scared.
    B.Puzzled.
    C.Disappointed.
    D.Surprised.
(2)What can we learn about Paul Salopek from paragraph 2?

    A.He was a western journalist.
B.He had a knowledge of China.
C.He came to China several times.
    D.He was Joseph Rock's acquaintance.
(3)What does paragraph 4 tell us about the writer and Paul?

    A.They honored the ancestors.
B.They set off in high spirits.
    C.They satisfied the locals' curiosity.
    D.They built bonds with people.
(4)What is the main purpose of the writer's writing the text?

A.To share and reflect on a journey.
B.To suggest a new way of travel.
    C.To advocate protection of biodiversity.
D.To introduce and promote Chinese culture.

  • 13.Everything you know is in your brain. For what you don't,you can ask the web. However,as you can imagine,in the past there were no computers and no web at all.Think about people living 3,500 years ago,in places where pyramids towered above them, instead of the modern buildings you can see around you.The lack of explanations about how things worked inspired the ancients to make discoveries and feed their curiosity.
But do not think they knew nothing:in fact,we still wonder how the Egyptians could build the pyramids using their own, rather rudimentary equipment. They wrote down their knowledge on books(called papyrus scrolls) so that later people could benefit from their skills.
Living safer and healthier was a top priority for the ancients:when they hurt their heads in battles, they used to heal their wounds using the cures, some of which were recorded on a papyrus now known as the Edwin Smith Papyrus.Interestingly, this is the oldest written evidence of the word"brain"we have on Earth, and it dates back to 3,500 years ago!
However, writing the word"brain"on a papyrus did not solve all the curiosities and questions about it.Around 2,500 years ago,for example, ancient Greeks wondered whether mind and soul lay in the brain or in the heart.
2,000 years ago.Roman physician Galen of Pergamon was sure he had solved the question:it was the brain, not the heart, that was the center of mental life. However,Galen had to convince the people around him that what he had discovered was true.It was not easy, mostly because people held their earlier beliefs.Every neuroscientist, just like Galen did,has to carefully observe reality, focus on something that is really interesting, think about how it can work, perform experiments, and discuss the data they get. This way, they can obtain convincing evidence to be shared with others.

(1)What encouraged the ancients to make discoveries?

    A.The hope for keeping curiosity.
    B.The need for writing books.
    C.The search for explanations.
    D.The wish to work faster.
(2)Which word can best replace"rudimentary"underlined in paragraph 2?

    A.Complicated.
    B.Primitive.
    C.Electrical.
    D.Protective.
(3)What can be learned about the Edwin Smith Papywus?

A.It was probably a medical text.
B.It was finished 2,500 years ago.
C.It was considered useless at first.
D.It was written by Galen of Pergamon.
(4)How did Galen convince people of his discovery?

A.By finding evidence from papyrus scrolls.
B.By asking many scientists to support him.
    C.By following strict scientific methods.
D.By teaching people to do experiments.

  • 14.Humans are not the only ones that like gold.Australian scientists have discovered a new fungus(真菌)that decorates its long,thread-like tendrils(卷須)with gold collected from the soil. The experts desperately hope the "gold digger" will provide information on the locations of gold deposits(沉淀物) and make searching for the precious metal easier, and more environmentally friendly.
The gold-loving fungus was discovered accidentally by a team of researchers led by Dr.Tsing Bohu,a scientist at Australia national science agency,CSIRO,when they were examining the microbes(微生物)in the soil at Boddington,a tiny town home to Australia's largest gold mine.
A closer analysis suggested that the fungus uses chemical interactions with underground minerals to accumulate gold from its surroundings.Though fungi often interact with other things in nature, the reaction with gold was unexpected. "Fungi are well-known for playing an important role in the recycling of organic material, such as leaves and bark,as well as for the cycling of other metals," Dr.Bohu explained. "But gold is so chemically inactive that this interaction is both unusual and surprising."
The fungi are not wearing the gold for beauty. "There is a biological benefit from this reaction." Dr.Bohu said, "Gold-loving fungi can grow faster and bigger relative to other fungi that don't work with gold."
The researchers still need to conduct further analysis to understand the relationship between the fungi and the precious metal.More importantly, they need to determine if its presence is a sure sign of the existence of large deposits of the metal underground. The scientists also believe the fungi could be used to detect the presence of gold in waste products and man-made electronics.
However, those hoping to get free gold from the fungi are in for a disappointment, for the delicate fungus is hard to see. Also, its gold can only be seen under a microscope.

(1)What are the experts starved of?

    A.Investigating the sites.
    B.Excavating the gold mines.
    C.Getting further informed.
    D.Unearthing gold deposits.
(2)What could be learned according to Dr.Bohu?

A.Fungi's interaction with gold is unexpected but beneficial.
B.Gold's classification is biologically identified by fungi.
C.Fungi's formation with gold is fairly natural and frequent.
D.Gold is chemically accumulated by fungi's evolution.
(3)How does the author find the finding?

A.It excites the gold diggers' motivation.
B.It has a long way to go before confirmation.
C.It lays the foundation of geological studies.
D.It ensures the search of gold sites.
(4)What can be the suitable title for the text?

    A.Beauty-loving Fungi Wrapped by Gold
    B.Gold-loving Fungi Discovered in Australia
    C.Boddington,Austria's Largest Gold Mine
D.New Discovery of Gold with Fungi
