第二部分 閱讀(共兩節(jié),滿分37.5分)第一節(jié) (共4小題;每小題2.5分,滿分37.5分)

  • 1.Several new films on ordinary people's contributions were released in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC).
       A kaleidoscope(萬(wàn)花筒)of heroes
Patriotism and realism reflected in My People,My Country are the top two elements that have won the audiences' hearts. "In the seven stories in My People,My Country, the protagonists(主角)are no longer the main creators of history," Zheng Yang,a teacher, said after watching the movie.
"We don't want to simply sing praises of China's achievements over the past 70 years;we want to show that all the achievements have been made thanks to the Chinese people's efforts," Chen Kaige, told People.com.cn in a video interview.
       A miraculous escape
The Captain, directed by Andrew Lau,is based on a real incident.
On May 14,2018,a Sichuan Airlines flight from Chongqing to Lhasa in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, made a miraculous escape when a cockpit window broke. It caused a sudden drop in the air pressure inside the aircraft, leading to the co-pilot almost being sucked out.He was saved by his seat belt. The temperature plunged to minus 40 degrees Celsius.
But against great odds,Captain Liu Chuanjian managed to land the plane and keep all 128 onboard safe.It was regarded as a miracle in civil aviation history.
       Peak performance
The Climbers,is based on two expeditions(探險(xiǎn))by Chinese climbers to Mt.Qomolangma, the highest mountain in the world.
In 1960,three Chinese climbers, were the first to reach the summit from the dangerous northern side, becoming the first men to do so.However, the feat was not recognized internationally as the team failed to provide any evidence. To vindicate the Chinese climbers,a gigantic team of over 400 members was put together in 1975.During this expedition, nine climbers reached the top.The expedition also measured the height of the peak-8,848.13 meters.

It has been an illuminating journey for Zhao.In the mid-1990s,when she went to study a foreign language at the Communication University of China, she chose her major more on a quirk.
"At that time, the university was offering Bangla,Nepali,Swahili and Tamil as foreign languages.I knew Bangla was spoken in Bangladesh,Nepali in Nepal and Swahili in Tanzania. But I had never heard of Tamil and I had no idea where it was spoken. So I signed up for this unheard-of language," she said.
Today, she is an expert in Tamil, the predominant language in Tamil Nadu.It is also spoken in Sri Lanka,Singapore and Malaysia. One of the oldest languages in the world with a history of about 2100 years, its script is formidable, leading to a noted Indian business tycoon(巨頭)calling it "the Great Wall of Tamil."

  • 3.At first glance, there is nothing unusual about the BingoBox store-shelves stacked with snacks line the walls, tempting passers-by through the glass windows. But on closer inspection,BingoBox is no ordinary store. The door opens only after customers scan a QR code to enter, and there is no cashier to tally up purchases-just a lone checkout counter in a corner. The Shanghai-based company is one of many unmanned store operators opening outlets all over China, hoping to improve slim profit margins in the retail business by reducing staff costs.
"If capital costs rise quickly, that puts greater pressure on low-margin businesses like convenience stores and supermarkets," said Andrew Song,an analyst at Guotai Junan Securities. "In China, manpower costs have been rising relatively quickly."
However, the futuristic vision of shopping without a checkout person is still in progress.A reporter who visited a BingoBox store in Shanghai was briefly locked in when he was trying to exit without making a purchase.Although a sign near the exit stated that empty-handed customers can leave by scanning a QR code,no QR code was to be found.Repeated calls to the customer service hotline went unanswered.
Another unmanned operation in China,Take Go,only allows one customer in the shop at a time because of technology limitations in using multiple cameras for scanning customers' faces.
The idea of unmanned stores first caught the world's attention when the largest US online retailer announced its cashier-less store, which is only available to employees for now.Since then, some technology companies in China, including the e-commerce firm Alibaba Group, have launched their own versions of unmanned stores.
Embedded with technology such as RFID tags, mobile payment systems and facial recognition systems, such stores collect valuable data that give operators a better idea of consumers' preference and buying habits, which can then be used to optimize the operation and make more efficient inventory decisions. For BingoBox,lower operating costs also mean it can afford to expand its reach to areas with less foot traffic, according to Chen Zilin, the founder and CEO of BingoBox.

(1)What makes the BingoBox store look like an ordinary convenience store?

    A.Shelves stacked with goods.
    B.A lone checkout counter.
    C.No cashier to check out.
D.Entering by scanning a QR code.
(2)Why are unmanned stores popular with operators?

A.The customers prefer mobile payment systems.
B.The unmanned stores help improve profit with lower labor costs.
C.The employees focus on consumers' preference and buying habits.
D.The operators care more about operations and inventory decisions.
(3)How many cases can show that the unmanned stores need improving?

    A.Two.
    B.Three.
    C.Four.
    D.Five.
(4)What can we infer according to Chen Zilin?

A.Nowadays all stores should be equipped with advanced technology.
B.The operators collect data about consumers' preference and buying habits.
C.BingoBox made wiser decisions based on the data collected in unmanned stores.
D.The operators can open unmanned supermarkets in more remote places with low costs.

Another disappointing day was passing, and he was driving his beat-up old car home. He was out all day looking for a job. It was getting dark and light snow was coming down, so he almost didn't see the old lady standing on the side of the road. It was clear that she needed help. He pulled up in front of her obviously brand new and expensive car and got out.
While nobody had stopped to help for the last hour and there was a smile on his face, she was worried when he approached her. He didn't look safe. He looked poor and hungry.
He could see she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He said, "I'm here to help you, ma'am. Why don't you wait in your car to keep warm? My name is Bryan."
A tire was flat. Bryan fetched tools from his own car to change the tire. But he had to get dirty and his hands hurt. As he was tightening her car's nuts, she rolled down the window, said thanks and asked him how much she owed him. Any amount would have been all right with her. She had already imagined all the awful things that could have happened without his help.
Bryan never thought twice about the money. He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone who needed help, she could give that person the assistance they needed. He waited until she started her car and drove off. It had been a cold and depressing day, but he felt good as he headed for home.
Soon the lady saw a small restaurant. She went in to grab a bite to eat and warm up before she made the last leg of her trip home. The waitress came over with a sweet smile and brought a clean towel to wipe her wet hair. The lady noticed the waitress was nearly eight months pregnant(懷孕的). Although the waitress looked tired and walked painfully due to the pregnancy, she still served the lady.
    Paragraph 1:
After the lady finished her meal, she paid with a one-hundred-dollar bill._________.
    Paragraph 2:
That night when the waitress got home from work, she was thinking about the money and what the lady had written._________.
