  • 2.On the outside,12-year-old Luna seems like your average kid. It's not until you get to know her that you learn that Luna is anything but average.
Born with a heart defect(缺陷) called dextrocardia,Luna has had three open-heart operations and continues to pursue her interests in art and fashion. But when Luna was approached by athletic shoe company Saucony to design a shoe for sale across the country,it came as quite a surprise.
"This is so incredible.I got to use my art and creativity for something new that I'd never thought I'd be able to design," Luna said. She is one of six patients from Boston Children' Hospital(BCH) who have partnered with Saucony to design their own shoe to launch the Shoes with Soul campaign.
"Rather than just a donation,we wanted to create an experience and a moment that would not only raise money, but also awareness to highlight all the amazing work that's being done at BCH," says Chris,Saucony's vice president. "Specifically,we wanted to give some of the BCH kids an opportunity to share their story and their talents with the world."
Luna's design is fashion. "On the tongue, they digitalized one of my drawings, and then on bottom it's a really bright pink color, and on the inside, the sole of the shoe is actually another drawing I did of a sunset," she said. "Thinking about kids everywhere around the world wearing my shoe is amazing. It blows my mind."
The income from the shoe sales will benefit the Boston Children's Hospital Cardiac Fitness Program, which encourages kids to "find your possible" through personalized exercise programs tailored for each individual patient's heart condition.
"It feels really good to help people and it's really something I can relate to," says Luna. "The advice I would give a kid or someone like me is never give up.There are a lot of kids out there with your condition and you're not alone."

  • 3.For more than a decade,a team of researchers have studied the dynamics of the Greenland Ice Sheet as it responds to a warming climate.Bu while much of their focus has been on waters impacts on ice sheet change, their most recent research findings have overturned the order of their thinking.Meierbachtol,Harper and their team discovered that changes in the ice sheet have a real impact on the massive groundwater system underlying Greenland.
This latest discovery occurred thanks to a marriage of drilling techniques.International cooperators made an angled hole650 meters through bedrock underneath a Greenland glacier (冰川) to measure groundwater conditions under the ice.Meanwhile, researchers drilled 32 holes from atop the glacier, through nearly a kilometer of ice,to measure water conditions at the area between ice and bedrock, which forms an important boundary controlling groundwater flow below. After drilling, the team fixed sensors in the ice column and at the ice sheet bed to measure ice dynamics and water conditions as water flows under the ice.
"By studying areas covered by ice 10,000 years ago,we have known that the huge mass and vast amounts of water from melting ice can impact the underlying groundwater," Meierbachtol said. "It's generally accepted that the groundwater is sleeping over decades to centuries and its response to ice sheet change is long:thousands of years. But what we've shown here is that it is immediate."
This new understanding could have important subsequent effects on how Greenland's thinning impacts the Arctic. The thinning ice could reduce the rate of groundwater flow to the ocean, changing the water temperature and salinity(鹽度)balance that is important for ocean circulation(循環(huán))patterns. "In thinking about the complex feed backs from Greenland's ongoing change,we have really ignored the groundwater component,Harper said.

(1)How do the researchers feel about the result of the recent study?

    A.Satisfied.
    B.Disappointed.
    C.Surprised.
    D.Doubtful.
(2)What contributes most to the new research about the Greenland Ice Sheet?

    A.Fixing sensors into ice sheet.
    B.Close international cooperation.
    C.Advanced rock drilling technology.
D.A combination of two drilling approaches.
(3)What is a misunderstanding of the groundwater under glaciers?

A.It has a very large volume.
B.It is inactive for a long time.
    C.Its component is complex.
    D.Its temperature is changeable.
(4)Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?

A.Water Impacts the Greenland's Ice Sheet
B.Longlasting Effects of Global Warming on the Arctic
C.Newly Discovered Groundwater Resources in Greenland
D.Greenland's Groundwater Changes with Thinning Ice Sheet

  • 9.閱讀下面材料,根據(jù)其內(nèi)容和所給段落開頭語續(xù)寫兩段,使之構(gòu)成一篇完整的短文。
It was in the 1930s,and things were tough.Mum had a hard time raising us on her own in our small community of New Westminster,BC.My dad had drowned in Pitt Lake, five years ago.
Looking back,I realize what Mum went through sending us kids to school.Every morning she would put a new piece of cardboard in our shoes, because the bottom parts were worn out. When we got home,Mum would have "French toast" ready for us.Constant moving was typical for my family in those times.Rent was 25 dollars a month, but Mum couldn't pay it,and we knew we would be evicted right after Christmas on the first of January.
Christmas was approaching, and we were entitled to a twenty-five-dollar Christmas fund from social services. The inspector came to our house, and searched it from top to bottom to be sure we didn't have any food hidden away. When he didn't find any,he issued the cheque to Mum.
Mum said that instead of buying food, she would use the 25 dollars to pay back rent, assuring all of us a roof over our heads for a little while longer. She told us then there would be nothing for Christmas.
Unknown to Mum,I had been selling Christmas tree, cleaning snow, and doing part-time jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of jye.ai.Boots that weren't patched, boots with no cardboard in the soles.I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch Top Genuine Pierre Paris and they had a price of 23 dollars.
Well, the big day came on the afternoon of Christmas Eve.I was excited,as I hurried up the road to the shoe store, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then I realized at our house,we had no lights,no decorations, nor any money for Christmas meals.I knew that we would have no turkey or ham for Christmas, and I felt sad.
    注意:
    (1)續(xù)寫詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150個左右;
    (2)請按如下格式在答題卡的相應(yīng)位置作答。

As I continued walking,I began to reconsider my plan.

With great excitement and tears,I knocked on the door of our house.
