  • 2.When I win at my favourite games,my opponents tend to say: 'OH,you're so competitive!' But when I lose, they smile good-naturedly and say: 'Bad luck!Good game!'
This suggests that accurate sporting expressions should go something like this:
       I am sporty.
       You are competitive.
       They can't bear to lose.
       Or:
       I gave it a go.
       You did your best.
       He tried desperately hard.
I'm not saying I don't have a competitive personality. We all do.On walks,I like to be out in front. In traffic jams,I find myself focusing on cars in other lanes, and fret if they edge ahead of me.I tense up while waiting for trains, determined to be first aboard. The other day,I was one of the first to board a train, grabbing a perfect spot in first class.Yes,I had won!Just halfway,I went to get a free drink for a first-class seat from the buffet. But I had left my ticket on my table.I worked out that,if I moved very swiftly,I could nip (快走) through two carriages, and nip back without anyone taking my place at the front of the queue.
So I rushed back, picking up my ticket, and turned back.I was at the beginning of the second carriage, when,to my horror,I noticed, another figure, roughly my size, shooting towards the buffet from the other direction.
Desperate to arrive before he did,I started walking faster. But at exactly the same moment,he started walking faster, too.Trying to retain my dignity,I broke into a running.Whatever happened,I was determined to win! But,annoyingly,at the same time as I sped up,so did he.The race was on.
Finally,in my rush,I knocked into a suitcase and stumbled slightly.Still with my eyes on my challenger,I noticed that-strange but true-exactly the same thing had happened to him.
It was only as we both lifted ourselves up in exactly the same way that I realised that, throughout the race,I had been looking at a reflection of myself in the sliding door!
My competitor for first place in the buffet queue was...me.

(1)Which sporting expression can replace "Bad luck!Good game!" in paragraph 1?

    A.I gave it a go.
    B.You did your best.
    C.You are competitive.
    D.He tried desperately hard.
(2)What does the underlined word "fret" in paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.Get anxious.
    B.Become relaxed.
    C.Feel disappointed.
    D.Remain excited.
(3)What can we learn about the author?

A.He never fails to beat anyone in his life.
B.He has a gift for games and competitions.
C.He is sporty but often aggressive to others.
D.He is highly competitive and desperate to win.
(4)Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?

A.Sad competitor?I can surely beat myself.
    B.Bad loser?No,but I can be a first-class fool.
    C.Competitiveness works?Not in my case.
D.More haste? It will only result in less speed.

  • 3.Experts analyzed how language can impact children's lives and the role it plays in everyday life. They also determined which languages tend to lead to the best career opportunities as an adult. "We believe that language learning is hugely beneficial for children's development and it's a real investment for the future," said Antonella Sorace, professor of developmental Inguistics and director of offinguatlsm matters at Edinburgh University. The study involved a survey of 2,001 parents with children under the age of 18,along with another survey of more than 500 business leaders.
So which languages took the top spot? Results indicated that children should be learning French,German,and/or Mandarin if they want to be successful within the next ten years.Proficiency in a second language opens the door to new markets for businesses and allows them to create new relationships with prospective partners.Aside from being able to speak another language, the academic and interpersonal skills that can be gained from learning a new language are important as well."Children who are exposed different languages become more aware of different cultures, other people, and other points of view. They also tend to be better than monolinguals at multitasking and are often more advanced readers, said Sorace.
A vast majority of parents surveyed in this study (85 percent) believe it,is important for their children to learn a second language, and about one in four believe it will enhance their child's career opportunities and boost employability. The future employment market are in need of space tour guide, robot coach, frontline e-commerce worker, nurse practitioner etc.No matter what a child choose to be,multilinguals and cross-culture talents will probably stand a good chance to take the lead.However,45 percent of parents surveyed admit that their child or children cannot speak a second language.
If you want your child to stand out from the crowd, brush up on the habits of parents of successful people—give children chores, set high but realistic expectations, get yourself educated, make time for bonding, accept and recognize their feelings—and,of course, make sure they learn one of the three success languages!

  • 4.Dumbphones have very limited functions compared to an iPhone. You can only make and receive calls and messages. And,if you are lucky-listen to radio and take very basic photos, but absolutely not connect to the internet or apps.
Dumbphones are enjoying a comeback.Google searches for them increased by 89% between 2018 and 2021.Meanwhile,a study said that one in 10 mobile phone users in the UK had a dumbphone.Kaiwei Tang,CEO of Light Phone,a maker of dumbphones said that, surprisingly, the company's main customers are aged between 25 and 35.He says he expected buyers to be much older.
Sandra Wachter,a researcher at Oxford University, says that it's easy to see why some of us are looking for simpler mobile phones. One can reasonably say that nowadays a smart phone's ability to connect calls and send messages is almost a side function.Your smart phone is your entertainment centre, your newspaper, your map, your diary, and your wallet. They always want to catch your attention with notices and latest news.
"If aliens came to earth they'd think that mobile phones are the creatures controlling human beings," Mr.Tang says. "It's not going to stop.Instead,it's getting worse.Consumers are realizing that something is wrong, and we want to offer a choice."
Last year,Przemek Olejniczak, changed his smartphone for a dumphone at first for its longer-lasting battery. However,he soon realized there were other benefits. "Before I would always be checking, going through the news,or other facts I didn't need to know," he says. "Now I have more time for my family and myself. And I'm not addicted to liking, sharing,or describing my life to other people.I have more privacy."
Yet back in London,Robin West says that many people are confused by her choice of mobile. "Everyone thinks it's just a short-term thing. They're always asking me: 'So when are you getting a smartphone? Are you getting one this week?' "

(1)What surprises Kaiwei Tang about dumbphones?

A.Few people show interest in them.
B.They are coming into fashion again.
C.Their buyers are mainly young people.
D.Dumbphones are in a wider use than smartphones.
(2)What does Sandra Wachter think of people's turning to dumbphones?

    A.Understandable.
    B.Unusual.
    C.Thoughtless.
    D.Meaningful.
(3)What does the author mention Robin West in the last paragraph?

A.To give suggestions on mobile choice.
B.To show public support for dumbphones.
C.To make a prediction about the future of dumbphones.
D.To introduce a different opinion on using dumbphones.
(4)Which of the following might be a suitable title for the text?

    A.Dumbphones are Here to Stay
    B.A Generation Controlled by Smartphones
    C.Smartphones:Where are they leading us?
    D.Another Choice?The Return of Dumbphones

  • 5.How similar are language and music? Language is part of our daily life,no matter where we live in the world. It is the same with music, whether you listen to it on the radio on your drive to work or sit before an orchestra. Both language and music play a huge role in our culture.(1)
?Both language and music have a writing system.
In English we record language using the alphabet, which is a collection of letters.Similarly,we use notes to keep a record of music.Musicians read notes and create meaning in the form of music.(2)
By writing pieces of text or music,we are able to share experiences through time.We can read the ideas or hear the composition of someone who lived hundreds of years ago.
       ?(3)
You can make a good guess at where someone is from by listening to the language they use.In the same way,we know that styles of music are different around the world, giving us the opportunity to explore many different cultures through their music and providing us with music for every situation.
       ?Both share emotion.
       (4)
Of course you may be able to see it in my face, but you will know for sure through my words.Similarly, music can sound angry, sad or happy.Music can show you exactly how the composer was or is feeling, and allows us to share in that emotion. When you feel happy, you might want to sing and dance to a happy song to celebrate your happiness.(5)
I think we have all used music to express or process our emotions, often combining it with language in the form of song lyrics.

    A.Both are expressive.
    B.Both vary with culture.
C.Here are some of their similarities.
D.How do you know that I am angry?
E.We use language to express our thoughts.
