2.When she was a child,Wu Yunchen often ate fish balls at her home in Yunlin County in Taiwan. Not because fish balls were her favorite dish, but because her parents ran a family business making them.
The family moved from Taiwan to Quanzhou in 1998 when she was 14.By that point, they had been producing fish balls for over a decade. They started a company,F(xiàn)u Bang Foodstuff.
Now,this childhood dish--- fish balls, which dates back to the Qing Dynasty, has become Wu's daily concern.Because the business environment has changed since her parents'time,Wu has had to become more active and creative to succeed.
With many more customers and the financial support from the government, the first generation made Fu Bang a leading catering(餐飲) business in Quanzhou. Now that Wu has taken over, she is taking the company into new markets using digital technology.
For her,the key to her parents' success was the quality of the fish balls they made, but she is taking a slightly different approach. To reduce costs and improve efficiency, she has focused on improvements to the production line, from the purchase of raw materials to production and packaging. She also opened the factory to visitors, building confidence among potential future customers.Of course, she also focused on the balls themselves.
Last year,Wu saw the young generation seldom cooks,so she capitalized on the trend and began working on new products. One new product was the instant fish ball.Normally, fish balls are frozen and have to be cooked, but the instant balls are ready to eat.The company also taught people how to make dishes with fish balls through livestreaming(直播).This attracted more customers.Under her leadership, sales volumes climbed by 34.2 percent last year.

3.Vaccines are the most important medical advance in human history.Scientists summarized their power this way:Ten historically deadly diseases have been reduced by 92-100% since the 20th century.Smallpox(天花) has been rooted out.Actually, vaccines have saved tens of millions of lives and prevented hundreds of millions of cases of disease. It is widely recognized that vaccines are safe, effective, and necessary.
However, with the rise of social media and the Internet, vaccine hesitancy and vaccine denial may seem to be new phenomena.Actually,it was so in history.Since the first vaccine was administered over 200 years ago, some form of vaccine hesitancy has existed.
In the 1790s by English physician Edward Jenner. When Dr.Jenner developed the vaccine for smallpox,it was initially met with doubt.Nevertheless,as its efficacy was demonstrated, scientific and public support grew, and vaccination began to spread, first in Europe and then around the world.
From the 1920s-1970s,many new vaccines were introduced that dramatically reduced the rates of deadly diseases. In the 1950s,polio(小兒麻痹癥) became the disease of most concern to the public. The significant reduction in polio's prevalence(流行) following the introduction of the Salk vaccine in 1954 helped to bolster the public's acceptance of vaccines.
In 1998,one of the most infamous studies in scientific history was published. In a famous medical journal,British physician Andrew Wakefield claimed some vaccines can cause autism(自閉癥).The effect of this has been alarming—a clear and sharp downward effect on vaccination rates.
The issues impacting vaccination rates today are largely the same as those first raised in response to the smallpox vaccine:the short-and long-term side effects of vaccinations, concerns about government intrusion into personal health decisions, the loss of knowledge of the devastation these diseases can have, and a general mistrust of evidence-based science in favor of non-scientists in the public media.

9.Cleaning out my closet is the thing I hate most. Each time it gets harder to let go of my belongings. When I put anything in the bag labeled"The Homeless,"I feel as if I am throwing away a piece of myself. Each item of clothing, jewelry,or shoes has a story I am not willing to lose.
One day,I took out a single earring(耳環(huán)).As I set it free, the sharp end stuck my finger.
The pain reminded me of the piercing gun(穿孔槍) pressed to my upper ear and how it shot through my ear.
Girls are born to love beauty.I was not the exception.I decided to get this earring when my parents were away for three days.I was to spend half the time with my aunt and the other half with family friends.Having never experienced this kind of freedom,I didn't know where to start.
While at the supermarket with my friend and her mom,I gathered courage and went into Claire's,planning to have my upper ear pierced.
As I nervously waited for my turn at Claire's,the employee assured me it was no big deal.
My racing heart told me otherwise.Sitting in the chair, she had me choose an earring.By this time,my anxiety was at an all-time high and I considered leaving many times.Taking her time, the lady carefully set up the piercing gun and cleaned my ear.Meanwhile, with a little sense of guilt,I thought of the results of what I was going to meet with.I was afraid to be scolded and punished by my parents. But I wanted to be cool.
The slight pain right after the click of the gun was nothing compared to the pain to come.In the weeks that followed,I could not sleep on my left side and had to clean my ear three times a day.The pain never seemed to go away but I didn't take it off.
