In the early 1800s in England,Mary Anning became one of the first women recognised for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth.Mary and her father collected fossils in their village on the south coast of Great Britain.Fossils are parts of plants or animals that have been saved in rocks for millions of years.
When she was only twelve years old,Mary became the first person to find the almost complete skeletons of several animals that no longer existed on earth. She didn't become famous for her discoveries at that time because she often sold her fossils to get money to support her family.
In 1891,a young Polish woman named Marie Sklodowska travelled to Paris to study physics. She did so because she could not get a college education in Poland. She began working in the laboratory of a man named Pierre Curie.Marie and Pierre Curie got married and made many discoveries together. They received the Nobel Prize for physics in 1903 along with another scientist.Marie Curie became the first person to be awarded a second Nobel Prize in 1911,this time for chemistry.Marie Curie was one of the few women at the time who became famous as a scientist.

2.Over the next 20 years,we are going to send more and better robots to Mars (火星).Those robots will send back better pictures, maps, samples, and weather reports. There is a limit to what robots can tell us,though,so eventually we will have to send people to study the planet. Before people can visit Mars,we need to invent a spaceship that can take us there.Mars is very far away.Depending on where Mars and Earth are in their orbits (軌道) around the sun,it could take between six months to a year to get there.
The moon is much closer, and we were there,25 years ago.Over the next 10 years,we are going to work on building a new spacecraft that can go to the moon.Using this craft,we will practice the skills we need to go to Mars.
Once we return to the moon,we are going to build a station so that people can live and work on the moon for months at a time. This is important so that we have a place to start from when we want to visit Mars, but it is also important because it gives us practice with living away from Earth.
By the time you are old enough to be an astronaut (宇航員),we will have people spending months on the moon.By the time you are old enough to be a commander (指揮官) of a space mission,we will be taking trips to Mars.By the time your kids are old enough to be astronauts,we may have people living on Mars.Wouldn't it be cool to get a postcard from someone who was building a house on Mars?Wouldn't it be cooler if it was you who sent the postcard?
(1)We eventually have to send people on Mars because
A.the pictures that robots have sent back are not very clear
B.robots can't tell us all we want to know
C.robots are controlled by us humans
D.the samples robots have sent back are not good enough
(2)From the first paragraph we can see the distance between Earth and Mars
A.is not always the same
B.is nearly the same
C.is unreachable
D.never changes very much
(3)A space station on the moon is important because
A.people can learn how to live on other planets
B.people can practice planting crops in it
C.the new spacecraft can only land on it
D.a(chǎn)stronauts can practice skills they need to go to Mars
(4)The author of the passage
A.thinks that trips to the moon are an unrealistic dream
B.encourages kids to be astronauts
C.hopes to receive a postcard from Mars

For many years,I had a recurring (重復(fù)出現(xiàn)的)dream.I was a little girl again, rushing about, trying to get ready for school.
"Hurry, you'll be late for school," my mother called to me.
"I am hurrying,Mom!What did I do with my books?"
Deep inside I knew where the dream came from.It was about some unfinished business in my life.As a kid,I loved everything about school.I loved books, teachers, tests and homework. Most of all I longed to someday march down the aisle(通道)to receive my diploma. That seemed more appealing even than getting married.
But at 15,I had to drop out because my parents couldn't afford tuition(學(xué)費(fèi)).My hope of getting a diploma was dead,or so I thought.Pretty soon,I married and had three children, and I thought:"There goes my diploma."
Even so,I wanted my children to be educated. But Linda, our youngest child, had juvenile arthritis (幼年型關(guān)節(jié)炎)in her hands and knees, which made it impossible for her to function in a normal classroom.I felt really sorry for her and I didn't want her to live her life with regret.I didn't give up hope of her being back to school in some way.
One day,I saw an ad in the newspaper for evening courses. "That's the answer,"I said to myself.Linda always feels better in the evening,so I'll just sign her up for night school.
Linda was busy filling out enrollment(入學(xué))forms when the secretary said:"Mrs.Schantz, why don't you come back to school?"
I laughed:"There's no way!I'm 55!" But he persisted, and before I knew what I had done,I was enrolled for classes in English and crafts. "This is only an experiment," I warned him,but he just smiled. So,I told myself to try for just a semester and to see if it would work.Anyway,my dream was still there in my heart.
