2.Not long ago,my wife and I tried a new diet - not to lose weight but to answer a question about climate change. We decided to try an experiment. For one month we tracked our personal emissions of CO2 as if we were counting calories. We wanted to see how much we could cut back.
The average US household produces about 70 kilograms of CO2 a day by doing common things like turning on air conditioning or driving cars. That's more than twice the European average and almost five times the global average. But how much should we try to reduce?
Climate experts claimed we need to reduce our household CO2 emissions by 80 percent to keep the world from reaching critical tipping points, such as the melting of the ice sheets in Greenland or West Antarctica. But can we really do that?
It seemed unlikely to me.Still,we wanted to track our progress as we tried so that we could change our habits if necessary.
To get a rough idea of our current carbon footprint,I checked it on The Environmental Protection Agency websjye.aie.It figured our annual CO2 emissions at 54,273 pounds,30 percent higher than the average U.S.jye.ai with two people. The main consumption was the energy we were using to heat and cool our house.Besides, lighting and appliances also suck up energy.
By the last week in July,we were finally getting into the flow of the reduced carbon lifestyle. We walked to the neighborhood pool instead of driving, biked to the local farmers' market on Saturday and sat out on the deck until dark, chatting over the sound of the crickets.Whenever possible I worked from home and when I commuted,I took bus and subway.
Our numbers looked pretty good when we crossed the finish line on August 1.Compared with the previous July,we cut electricity use by 70 percent, natural gas by 40 percent, and reduced our driving to half the national average. In terms of CO2,we cut our emissions to an average of 32 kilograms a day, which, though twice as much as we targeted as our goal, was still half the national average.
(1)Which of the following can be a title of the passage?
A.Replacing Fossil Fuels
B.One Family's Energy Diet
C.Our Current Carbon Footprint
D.How Are We Changing the Climate
(2)Why did the author compare CO,emissions in different areas?
A.To prove the expert's claim.
B.To emphasize the need to change.
C.To praise global efforts in energy cutting.
D.To show the difficulty in finishing the task.
(3)How does the author learn his personal carbon emission?
A.By consulting expert opinions.
B.By counting his electrical appliances.
C.By checking his energy consumption.
D.By reading an instructional handbook.
(4)How does the author feel about-the result of their experiment?
A.Surprised.

3.We have become so accustomed to the large-scale insights afforded by technology that many of us wouldn't buy so much as shoes without first checking reviews online. And yet, when it comes to many more important decisions - like what we choose to study or who to marry - we often trust our gut(直覺).
This, argues data scientist Seth Davidowitz,is where we are going wrong. In his new book Don't Trust Your Gut,he wants us to use the insights afforded by big data to inform life decisions such as who to marry and where to live. "While we often think we know how to better ourselves, the numbers disagree, " he writes.
Though entertaining and thought-provoking,Don't Trust Your Gut is most persuasive as "self-help that actually works" when it is breaking down our settled beliefs in sources of life satisfaction. The author suggests, these might be as simple as calling a friend,or taking a walk near water. He demonstrates how data outlines what works best for most people,so that all of us might learn from their example. If you want to be happier day to day,for example, you might be better off making friends at work than pushing for a salary increase.Working with friends may be the "one way to truly make work tolerable - or even enjoyable".
But his somewhat ideal view of data can be at odds with a world already transformed by it.Numbers may not lie,as Seth writes - but nor do they reveal the complete, complex picture. When our behavior is already being shaped by data when we are unaware, perhaps success isn't always a matter of making the right decision. This he acknowledges in the book's dedication (致謝) to his wife: "If the data says that loving you is wrong,I don't want to be right. "
(1)What can be learned from paragraph 1?
A.People are addicted to the Internet.
B.Data help us make daily decisions.
C.We are careful about our decisions.
D.We rely on technology to make big decisions.
(2)What does the underlined "This" in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Picking goods on line.
B.Choosing who to marry.
C.Following our feelings.
D.Checking public reviews.
(3)What can be inferred from the author's dedication to his wife?
A.Data has shaped human's behavior.
B.Data may not contribute to success.
C.Data never lies and is worth trusting.
D.Data can help you choose the right partner.
(4)What is the purpose of the passage?
A.To recommend a book on data.
B.To persuade people to live on data.
C.To argue for the pros and cons of data.
D.To demonstrate how to make a wise decision.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5

On windy days Harry stood at his window and watched his friends having fun.He watched Emma rode her bike and her hair flew out behind her in the wind.Liam was sailing his boat in a little pond.Harry drew a picture of a boat sailing in the wind.He wished he weren't afraid.
One day Antony came to Harry's house to play. "Look at my paper plane. " said Antony. "It does tricks when I fly it outside in the wind. " "Nice. " said Harry.
They played cars, robots and drew pictures. Then clouds rolled in.The tree in front of Harry's house was shaking. "Let's go outside. The wind is blowing.I want to fly my paper plane. "
Harry was silent when Antony went out.He stayed inside and played with his construction set.He pictured launching the paper plane with Anthony. But when he imagined the wind blowing against his face,he froze. He felt sad to be in his room while everyone else was outside.

Harry pretended the kite was flying against the clouds. But after a while,he got tired of pretending.Outside the window,Antony's paper plane was making circles.Harry sigjye.aid.He got tired of feeling afraid.
