2.A dog's loyalty to his home is making national headlines after his owner found him guarding the home weeks after the house and the surrounding area were burned to the ground by Northern Califomia's Camp Fire.Madison,an Anatolian shepherd dog, reunited with 75-year-old Andrea Gaylord on Wednesday-the first day she was allowed to return to her land in the Town of Paradise.
But Madison hadn't been totally on his own before that. After the fire in early November, animal rescuer Shayla Sullivan received a request to search for Gaylord's two dogs,Madison and his brother,Miguel.Sullivan said that when the fast-moving Camp Fire broke out,Gaylord had just minutes to escape and wasn't able to find Madison and Miguel.
A different rescue worker managed to catch Miguel not long afterward, and he was finally reunited with Gaylord and her husband. But while Madison's location remained an enigma,Sullivan didn't think he was too far away. After all, some type of animal was eating the food and water she was frequently leaving out.
As it turned out,Sullivan was right but it took a familiar person coming home to convince Madison it was safe to show his face. "When Gaylord drove-up-to her home,it took about five or ten minutes for Madison to come running up to greet her, tail wagging. When Gaylord showed up,he smelled her, "Sullivan said.
Even more amazing was seeing Miguel and Madison reunite with each other.Miguel had been so sad being without his brother and away from his home.

3.When students and parents are asked to rate subjects according to their importance, the arts are unavoidably at the bottom of the list.Music is nice, people seem to say,but not important.Too often it is viewed as main entertainment, but certainly not an education priority(優(yōu)先).This view is shortsighted. In fact, music education is beneficial and important for all students.
Music tells us who we are.Because music is an expression of the beings who create it,it reflects their thinking and values,as well as the social environment it came from.Rock music represents a lifestyle just as surely as a Schubert song. The jazz influence that George Gershwin and other musicians(introduced into their music is obviously American because it came from American musical traditions.Music expresses our character and values. It gives us identity as a society.
Music provides a kind of perception that cannot be acquired in any other way.Science can explain how the sun rises and sets. The arts explore the emotional meaning of the same phenomenon. We need every possible way to discover and respond to our world for one simple but powerful reason:No one way can get it all.
The arts are forms of thought as powerful in what they communicate as mathematical and scientific symbols. They are ways we human beings "talk" to each other. They are the language of civilization through which we express our fears, our curiosities, our hungers, our discoveries, and our hopes. The arts are ways we give form to our ideas and imagination so that they can be shared with others. When we do not give children access to an important way of expressing themselves such as music,we take away from them the meanings that music expresses.
Science and technology do not tell us what it means to be human. The arts do.Music is an important way we express human suffering, celebration, the meaning and value of peace and love.So music education is far more necessary than people seem to realize.
(1)According to Paragraph 1,students
A.regard music as a way of entertainment
B.disagree with their parents on education
C.view music as an overlooked subject
D.prefer the arts to science
(2)In Paragraph 2,the author used jazz as an example to
A.compare it with rock music
B.show music reflects a society
C.introduce American musical tradition
D.prove music influences people's lifestyles
(3)According to the passage, the arts and science
A.express people's feeling in different ways
B.explore different phenomena of the world
C.a(chǎn)pproach the world from different angles
D.explain what it means to be human differently
(4)What is the main idea of the passage?
A.Music education is more necessary.
B.Music should be of top education priority.
C.Music is an effective communication tool.
D.Music education makes students more imaginative.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.5 -
4.Recently I read Nineteen Eighty-Four,a novel by George Orwell set in a state where even the language they use is controlled.Adjectives are forbidden and instead they use phrases such as 'ungood', 'plus good' and 'double plus good' to express emotions. As I first read this I thought how impossible it would be in our society to have such vocabulary. However, the more I thought about it,the more 1 realised in its own way it's already happening.I type messages to my friends and alongside each is the emoji(表情).I often use them to emphasize something,or to not seem too serious,or because this specific GIF conveys)my emotions much better than I ever could using just words. And I wonder, with our excessive use of emojis, are we losing the beauty and diversity of our vocabulary?
English has the largest vocabulary in the world, with over one million words, but who's to say what it'll be like in the future?Perhaps we will have a shorter language, full of saying 'cry face' if something sad happens or using abbreviations(縮寫)like LOL(laugh out loud)or BRB(be right back)instead of saying the full phrase. So does this mean our vocabulary will shrink? Is it the start of an exciting new era? Will they look back on us in the future and say this is where it all began-the new language?Or is this a classic case of the older generations saying. 'Things weren't like that when I was younger. We didn't use emoticons to show our emotions'?
Yet when you look back over time, the power of image has always been there.Even in the prehistoric era they used imagery to communicate, and what's even more incredible is that we are able to analyse those drawings and understand the meaning of them thousands of years later.Pictures have the ability to transcend time and language.Images allow us to convey a message that's not restrictive but rather universal.
(1)Why does the author mention Nineteen Eight Four?
A.To introduce the topic.
B.To show an example.
C.To give the reason.
D.To describe a phenomenon.
(2)Why does the author like using emojis?
A.To reduce the use of words.
B.To save time of typing.
C.To express naturally and casually.
D.To make fun of friends.
(3)Which of the following can best replace the underlined word "shrink" in Para 2?
A.Disappear.
B.Decrease
C.Lower.
D.Change.
(4)What will the author agree with?
A.Emojis will destroy the variety of our vocabulary.
B.Emojis will replace English as the most popular language.
C.Emojis are useless and meaningless in modern life.
D.Emojis will not restrict our communication.組卷:0引用:1難度:0.3
