  • 2.You can't imagine how terrible I felt at that time!A month before my first marathon(馬拉松),one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train.Yet,I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E.jye.ai,the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball.I didn't do either well.He later informed me that I was "not athletic".
The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s,I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind.A test of wills!
The night before my marathon,I dreamed that I couldn't even find the finish line.I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line,my shoe laces(鞋帶) became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3,I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT,RUNNERS!"
By mile 17,I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly.Despite the pain,I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
       By mile 21,I was starving!
As I approached mile 23,I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan.She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact,I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly label(世俗標(biāo)簽),I can now call myself a "a marathon winner".

(1)A month before the marathon, the author
    .
    A.lost hope

(3)How was the author's first marathon?

    A.He got the first prize.
    B.He quit halfway.

Many students say they need to be in the US for more than attending cljye.ais.As a PhD student, the library is an extremely important resource for them, although it is because of COVED that those services have been closed, which means even this advantage is gone.
"You know more than 90% of the international students who were studying the US when COVID-19 hit and college campuses were closed have to remain in the US and this creates such trouble in their lives and such uncertainty that is unreasonable." said a lady from a university.
International students staving in the United States say the new ruling has disturbed their plans to return. "I know it is a fact that when it comes to rules, guidelines, laws and stuff like that, international students are sort of treated as low-level citizens.Even I can't even use the word "citizen" to begin with because that's what they make clear we are not."
The government said that the policy speaks for itself and that online coursework is not worth a visa.So far,not any sign of change has been within sight. As students are waiting for the policy to improve, their fall programming and their future remain in limbo.

(1)Why would international students prefer to stay in the US during the pandemic?

B.They can make full use of the library resource.
C.They wouldn't bring any potential danger to their family.

    A.Horrible.
    B.Flexible.
    C.Uncertain.
    D.Unbelievable.

  • 4.There is hope for our planet's survival.Innovative products are being designed to reduce our reliance on plastic,single-use plastic in particular.
One such innovation comes from international design firm Carlo Ratti Associati with its "Feel the Peel" machine,an experimental rounded juice bar that not only makes freshly squeezed orange juice, but also 3 D prints a recyclable bioplastic cup with the leftover orange peels.
Designed with global energy company Eni,the juicer is 10 feet tall and topped with a massive dome(圓頂),feeding the juicer with oranges on demand. The dome is made up of round tracks that hold up to 1,500 oranges.A 3 D printer is set up in the base of the machine.
The machine goes like magic. When an order is placed, the oranges slide down the tracks to a squeezer, and the juice is then deposited into an "orange peel" bioplastic cup, ready to enjoy.Meanwhile, the freshly squeezed peels fall down a tube and accumulate at the bottom of the machine where they are dried, milled(碾磨)and mixed with Polylactic Acid, creating a bioplastic material. The bioplastic is then heated and melted into a filament and the 3 D printer then creates recyclable bioplastic cups, ready to be filled with freshly squeezed juice.
How cool that is!It seems that Carlo Ratti Associati and Eni have plans to take Feel the Peel beyond just orange juice.
"The principle of circularity is a must for today's objects," says Carlo Ratti."Working with Eni,we tried to show circularity in a very tangible(有形的)way,by developing a machine that helps us to understand how oranges can be used well beyond their juice. The next improvement of Feel the Peel might include new functions, such as printing fabric for clothing from orange peels."

(1)What is the aim of creating the "Feel the Peel" machine?

    A.To design innovative products.
    B.To produce single-use plastic cups.
    C.To carry out various experiments.
D.To take something beyond just juice.
(2)What is the main idea of Paragraph 4?

    A.How the new juicer works.
    B.What the two companies share.
C.Where the new tool comes from.
D.Why the machine is catching on.
(3)According to Carlo Ratti,we can infer that
    .
A.circularity can be shown in a very popular way
B.their new machine still has some potentials
C.his company is very interested in Eni's design
D.a(chǎn) product can help us understand our world
(4)What can be the best title for the text?

A.Orange Peels Arrive in a New Form
    B.Innovative Products Are Being Designed
    C.Orange Juicer 3 D Prints Bioplastic Cups
    D.Carlo Introduces a Recyclable Machine
