  • 2.I was about 30 years old and was working as a firefighter in the South Bronx Engine Co.82.On a restful Sunday,I was reading a copy of The New York Times.I read an article on the Book Review section which openly stated an untrue and unfair statement about an Irish poet William Butler Yeats. As I read it,my blood began to boil.
I grabbed a piece of paper and wrote out a letter of anger to the editor.Yeats had lived his life and written his poetry through the very essence of his Irish sensibility. It was offensive to describe him in the way that article did.I didn't know why I felt it my duty to safeguard the reputation of the world's greatest poet.I just knew that I had to write the letter.
After the letter got published,I received a letter from The New Yorker asking for an interview. When my article Fireman Smith appeared in the magazine, the editor of a large publishing firm called me asking if I was interested in writing a book about my life.I had little confidence to write a whole book, though the subject was worthy.I wrote Report from Engine Co.82 in six months. And it sold really well.In the years that followed,I wrote three more best-sellers.
Being a writer had been far from my expectations. How had it happened?I often found myself thinking about it.And my thoughts always came back to that letter to The New York Times. For me,the writing was a natural consequence of the passion I felt and the subjects represented the great values burning within me as I wrote.

(1)What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 imply?

A.I felt puzzled when I read the article.
B.I felt angry at the statement in the article.
C.I became excited when I read about Yeats.
D.I was very proud of Yeats being a universal author.
(2)Why did the author write to the New York Times?

A.To present his love for literature.
B.To spread Irish culture to the world.
C.To protect the reputation of an Irish poet.
D.To express his expectation of being a writer.
(3)According to the author, what is the key to his success in writing?

    A.His skills in arguing.
    B.His educational background.
    C.His passion for writing.
    D.His experience as a firefighter.
(4)What is the best title of the passage?

A.My Journey to Be a Writer.
B.A Letter That Changed My Life.
C.How to Become a Great Author.
D.My Defense of Ireland's Greatest Poet.

  • 3.Widespread descriptions of animals in pop culture could actually be hurting the animals' survival chances in the wild,a new research suggests.
Franck Courchamp of the University of Paris-Sud was interested in the idea of "appeal" (吸引力) in animals. He wanted to know:What species do people consider appealing? And what are the influences of being appealing on populations of animals in the wild?
In a research published this month,Courchamp and other researchers list the top 20 appealing species. Most of the animals identified as appealing are large mammals living on land.Coming in first place are tigers, followed by lions, elephants, giraffes, panthers, pandas, cheetahs, polar bears, wolves, and gorillas. However,at least half of the interviewees didn't realize that five of the top ten most appealing species are threatened. It is strange that we do not protect the species we care about the most.
The study also finds that we are flooded with images of these creatures, even as they are becoming fewer in the wild. The study suggests that too much imagination might be creating a "virtual population" of the animals in peoples' minds, making them believe there are far more individuals in the wild than is exact.
The study authors suggest that companies who benefit from the use of these images should set aside a small percentage of their profits for protection efforts and informational campaigns. "That would be not only something fair, but something that could bring a win-win situation for them," Courchamp says.It could bring them positive public relation, for example.Besides,if a company's mascot (吉祥物) goes extinct, that could hurt them from a marketing point,Courchamp says. But not enough companies are "truly concerned about the protection of the species that they work on," he adds.

(1)It can be inferred that the widespread images of animals in pop culture
    .
A.lead people to forget the less appealing animals
B.make a false impression of the animals' real situation
C.raise people's wildlife protection attention and efforts
D.bring a win-win situation for both animals and companies
(2)According to the research, panthers and cheetahs
    .
    A.a(chǎn)re going extinct
    B.a(chǎn)re well protected
    C.a(chǎn)re among the best liked
D.have a large population in the wild
(3)Courchamp lists the companies' responsibilities and their advantages by
    .
    A.giving examples
    B.making definition
    C.making comparisons
    D.using numbers
(4)What's Courchamp's attitude to the companies benefiting from animal images?

    A.Neutral.
    B.Supportive.
    C.Positive.
    D.Dissatisfied.

A few years ago,the company I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year.I've always loved running,so I was really happy when I found out the apartment they had rented for us was next to the Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park,I didn't usually take anything with me.How could they rob me if I didn't have anything? But one morning,my wife gave me a $ 10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way.
It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running, another jogger knocked into me.He apologized and continued running. For a while,I didn't think too much of it.However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running,I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of robbers in the park occurred to me. "It could have been a robber!" I suddenly became alarmed,so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing!Without thinking twice,I ran after that jogger.I finally caught up with him and grabbed him firmly by the arm.I shouted, "Give me the $ 10 bill! Now!" I'm not usually a hot-headed (性急的) person, but I really lost my temper at that moment.I couldn't believe the robbery was actually happening to me.Filled with anger,I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him.He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home.As soon as I got home,I couldn't wait to tell my wife the story. "You won't believe what happened to me," I started with pride. She immediately interrupted (插話(huà)), "I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table."

    Paragraph 1
Looking at the money on the table,I stood there,shocked.__________
    Paragraph 2
For several days,I waited at the same spot.__________
