Were the birds on the ice ducks or geese?Cruz Genet,11,and Anthony Sko pick,10,couldn't agree. There was only one way to find out.So on a cold January evening, the two friends risked onto the frozen pond near their house in Frankfort,Illinois,to get a better look.First they threw a small stone to test it.Then they stepped on it.Believing the ice would hold their weight,Anthony took a few steps, then he fell through the seemingly frozen ice.
Cruz rushed to help his frightened friend-the pond "ate" him too.Cruz managed to lift himself out of the water and onto a more reliable part.He then carefully made his way to Anthony. But the ice didn't hold, and he fell in again. This time he couldn't get out.The boys quickly lost feeling in their arms and legs.Cruz was sure he was going to die.
Anthony's older sister had seen the boys fall through the ice and started screaming for help.John Lavin,a neighbour driving nearby on his way to the grocery store, heard her.He quickly pulled over.Seeing the boys,he kicked off his shoes, and ran into the freezing water.Lavin made his way to Cruz and Anthony and saved them back to land. They were taken to the hospital, where doctors discovered that their five-minute stay in the water had lowered their body temperature nearly ten degrees.

As I got into the plane flying to Boston last week and saw what row I was sitting in,I could see a mother sitting in the first seat and in the middle was a little girl,2 or 3 I'm guessing, put into a car seat.As I looked at the mother,I could sense her nervousness-likely worried as to who would be sitting next to her daughter and what the reaction would be.
Once I sat down,I could see why she was worried. The small child was handicapped and struggled to perform many of the functions the rest of us take for granted. Her eyes seemed to wonder, her arms would occasionally wave about, and she appeared to be a child dumb as well.
But in spite of all of this, she was a beautiful little girl with a magical smile. And when I looked at her and smiled, she would return the favor.
After a while, she started grabbing my arm so as to hold it.Her mother would quickly ask her to stop and at first I acted like I didn't notice.About the 4th time the little girl grabbed my arm with her small hand and the mother began to ask her to stop,I gave her a simple look of confidence and told her everything was OK,and that as a father of four little ones myself,it was nice to have someone the same age of my youngest, sitting next to me.
The mother seemed relieved and for the rest of the 90-minute flight,I felt a little hand across my forearm.Once again, gratitude filled my heart as thoughts and reflections on my own life, health, and children flooded my mind.
(1)Why did the mother look nervous?
A.Because she took up the author's seat.
B.Because her child was making noises.
C.Because she was worried about her child.
D.Because her child might cause trouble.
(2)When did the author know the child was handicapped?
A.When the mother told him about the child.
B.When he asked the mother some questions.
C.When he had a talk with the small child.
D.When the child failed to do usual behavior.
(3)What's the author's attitude towards the child?
A.Fatherly.
B.Negative.
C.Doubtful.
D.Indifferent.

After years of heated debate, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park.Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park.
By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually
displaced
by human development.By the 1920s,wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.
The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results.Deer and elk populations — major food sources(來源) for the wolf - grew rapidly. These animals consumed large amounts of vegetation(植被),which reduced plant diversity in the park.In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park' s red foxes, and completely drove away the park's beavers.
As early as 1966,biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets.
The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The U.S.Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone.Today, the debate continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone.Elk,deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.
(1)What is the text mainly about?
A.Wildlife research in the United States.
B.Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area.
C.The conflict between farmers and gray wolves.
D.The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park.
(2)What does the underlined word "displaced" in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Tested.
B.Separated.
C.Forced out.
D.Tracked down.
(3)What did the disappearance of gray wolves bring about?
A.Damage to local ecology.
B.A decline in the park's income.
C.Preservation of vegetation.
D.An increase in the variety of animals.
(4)What is the author's attitude towards the Yellowstone wolf project?
A.Doubtful.
B.Positive.
C.Disapproving.
D.Uncaring.
