No matter how small you are,you can also give help or support to others.I didn't understand these words until I saw my grandfather weep that day.
I grew up in Southern California, and my family often went to Disneyland,Knott's Berry Farm, and Sea World. The highlight of those park visits for me was always the evening activities, when there would be fireworks.
As I grew older and more observant,I noticed that my grandfather would go missing just before the fireworks were scheduled to start and reappear shortly after they finished.I asked my mother about this and was told that Grandpa didn't like to hear the noise of the explosions. They reminded him of the war and his fellows who died in the war.So every time there was fireworks,he would go inside the bathrooms until they were done.I felt surprised because my grandfather was such a strong man.
One summer night, somewhere near my tenth birthday,my family and I exited a ride just in time to hear over the loudspeakers, "In only two minutes, the lights will be turned off around the Rivers of America, and Disneyland will present their fireworks in the skies over the park." At this moment,Grandpa was just in front of me,and when he heard the announcement,he started jogging ahead without a word to anyone.Without really thinking,I took off after him, against the orders of my mother, who repeatedly called after me to stay with the rest of the family.Grandpa, unaware that I was behind him, tried desperately to walk through the masses of people who were stopped in the street waiting for the show to begin.
As he tried to reach the restrooms, the first shell(煙花彈)broke in the skies above us.Grandpa paused and looked up,just looking as if he had been hit by a shot. And then he kept moving forward. As shell after shell burst overhead,he struggled forward, and almost fell over before he could sit onto a bench nearby.

  • 1.I went up to the roof for a break after studying for an hour and watched the 50 or so people swimming in the natural rock pool below our house. It was a sunny day—a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea.But then,as I looked in the distance,I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore.I'd seen these mini-tsunamis(海嘯) many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the pool. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach,I could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking,I ran down into the street, holding my bodyboard(俯伏沖浪板) on the way and shouted at a stranger to go inside my house and call the coastguard. My neighbour Moises had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard,so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.
Once we got closer,we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl from the pool and into the open sea.I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us.Waiting for help wasn't a choice.I wasn't used to this sort of emergency —I'd never been trained as a lifeguard一but I didn't think twice about trying to save them.I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone;at 19,a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.
Moises and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally ireached them.they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear that they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer.I held the boy and pulled him over my board.Moises moved the girl onto his board. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.

Many years ago there lived in Holland a boy named Peter.Peter's father was one of the men who tended the gates in the dikes(堤壩),called sluices. He opened and closed the sluices so that ships could pass out of Holland's canals into the great sea.
One afternoon in the early fall, when Peter was eight years old,his mother called him from his play. "Come,Peter," she said. "I want you to go across the dike and take these cakes to your friend, the blind man.Remember that you shall be home before dark." The little boy was glad to go on such an errand(跑腿),and started off with a light heart. He stayed with the poor blind man a little while to tell him something about his walk along the dike-the sun,the flowers and the ships far out at sea. Then he remembered his mother's wish that he should return before dark.Bidding his friend goodbye,he set out for home.
As he walked beside the canal,he noticed how the rains had swollen the water, and how they beat against the side of the dike, and he thought of his father's gates. "I am glad they are so strong," he said to himself."If the dike gave way what should we do?These pretty fields would be covered with water." As he walked along the dike he sometimes stopped to pick the pretty blue flowers that grew beside the road,or to listen to the rabbits' soft tread as they rustled through the grass.
Suddenly he heard a noise. It was the sound of trickling water! He stopped and looked down. There was a small hole in the dike, through which a tiny stream was flowing.Any child in Holland is frightened at the thought of a leak in the dike.Peter understood the danger at once.If the water ran through a little hole it would soon make a larger one,and the whole country would be flooded. In a moment he saw what he must do.Throwing away his flowers,he climbed down the side of the dike and thrust his finger into the tiny hole. The flowing of the water was stopped! "Oh!" he said to himself. "I can keep the water back with my finger.Holland shall not be drowned while I am here. "
This was all very well at first, but soon it grew dark and cold. The little fellow shouted and screamed. "Come here;come here," he called. But no one heard him;no one came to help him.

Tim recently graduated from the university and was looking for a job. After searching on the Internet,he found out that a famous online business company is recruiting (招聘)a new office manager. Many candidates(求職申請人)applied, but only one would be accepted in the end.
Tim was surprised to see that some of them held a Master's Degree or Doctor's Degree. But Tim was only a Bachelor(學(xué)士),and hardly met the lowest requirement.Tim felt a bit disappointed.
All the candidates entered the exam hall.Tim looked through the pages of the test paper and found out that the questions were very difficult for him.Tim tried to calm down and started with the easiest ones and moved on to the more difficult ones slowly.
There were two invigilators(監(jiān)考人)in the hall. They seemed to be quite confident about the honesty of the candidates. After about 10 minutes, one of the invigilators left to answer a phone call. The other invigilator soon went out too.
The atmosphere in the exam hall changed after the invigilators had left. Some of the candidates took out notes and books and some of them brought mobile phones to search for answers, and some even called others for help.Tim looked back, and he saw the candidate sitting behind him cheating too.The man whispered to Tim,as if telling him to cheat in the test because everyone was doing so.Tim shook his head and continued doing the difficult problems at a slow pace.
In about half an hour, the invigilators returned to the exam hall.Tim still had one question left blank at the end of the test.He was almost sure that he was not going to be accepted.
    Paragraph 1:
The test result was to Tim's surprise._______
    Paragraph 2:
Tim then understood everything that had happened._________
