Brownie and Spotty were neighbor dogs who met every day to play together.Like pairs of dogs you can find in any neighborhood, these two loved each other and played together so often that they had worn a path through the grass of the field between their houses.
One evening,Brownie's family noticed that Brownie hadn't returned home. They went looking for him with no success.Brownie didn't show up the next day,and although they made their efforts to find him,by the next week he was still missing.
Curiously,Spotty showed up at Brownie's house alone, barking and jumping.Busy with their own lives, they paid no attention to the nervous little neighbor dog.
Finally, one morning Spotty refused to take "no" for an answer.Ted,Brownie's owner, was continuously disturbed by the angry, determined little dog.Spotty followed Ted around, barking all the time, then darting toward a nearby empty lot(an area of land) and back,as if to say, "Follow me!It's urgent(緊急的)!"
Eventually,Ted followed Spotty across the empty lot as Spotty stopped to race back and barked encouragingly. The little dog led the man to a deserted spot. There Ted found his beloved Brownie alive, one of his legs stuck in a steel trap.Frightened,Ted now wished he had followed Spotty earlier.
Then Ted noticed something.Spotty had done something else besides leading Brownie's human owner to his trapped friend. In a circle around the injured dog,Ted found some food remains of every meal.Brownie had been fed that week!Spotty had been visiting Brownie regularly,in the hope of keeping his friend alive.Spotty had actually stayed with Brownie to protect him from hunger and other dangers, and keep his spirits up.
Brownie's leg was carefully treated and he soon got well again. For many years thereafter the two families watched the faithful friends running after each other down that well-worn path between their houses.

  • 1.People in Brazil mark Carnival(狂歡節(jié))every year and it is considered to be one of the most important national holidays. It is not about a big moment in history or a famous person, but it is important for the people because it is a time of friendship, freedom, and many days without work.People can choose between parties and rest. Most people choose parties, day after day, night after night.
Carnival is celebrated forty days earlier than Easter, but it is not recognized by the church. It lasts four days and four nights.People put on their holiday clothes and go out into the streets or to clubs to enjoy themselves together.
There are also some celebration activities. For instance, samba schools make a parade showing their music and beautiful cars. They are followed by people.Every year the parade tells a different story, and each city has one or more schools like this.
In the south the celebration of Carnival comes back to normal by Wednesday. The problem is that it is not recognized by the church in the northwest where the Carnival is more traditional. There, people do not respect its end and continue to party until the next Sunday.
Carnival is my favorite holiday, but I do not agree that the party should keep going.Like at other popular parties, people drink, dance and have fun.Unfortunately, some people are not very responsible and give it a bad name, leaving a bad impression of this holiday, but it is the only national holiday that brings the whole country and its different people and cultures together.

A.The Carnival is the most interesting holiday in Brazil.
B.The Carnival is celebrated to honor a famous person.
C.All of the people enjoy themselves in public places during the Carnival.
D.People do not need to work during the Carnival in Brazil.
(2)From this passage,we can infer that the Carnival
    .
A.is a favored holiday in Brazil

C.is when people miss their ancestors
D.is when people present gifts to each other
(3)What's the author's attitude to the Carnival?

  • 2.Scientists have already studied how dogs respond to people's behavior and speech. But researchers are just scratching the surface of human-cat interactions.House cats do appear to respond to the expressions on people's faces.Cats can also tell different human voices. But can cats recognize their own names?
Saito,a psychologist at Sophia University in Tokyo, and her colleagues decided to find the answer. They asked the owners of 77 cats to say four nouns of similar length followed by the cat's name.Cats gradually lost interest in each random(隨機(jī)的)noun. But when the owner said a cat's name, the cats reacted strongly. They moved their ears, head or tail, changed their back paw's position. And,of course, they miaowed.
These findings mean that cats join the ranks of animals that have shown some sort of response in experiments to the names people give them. Those animals include dogs, dolphins, apes and parrots. Some dogs, for example, can tell the difference between hundreds of human words. It's hard to compare the number of words across species, though.
The study makes a strong case that cats are perfectly capable of recognizing their own names.Getting a treat or hug as a reward is part of how cats learn to recognize a name. However, owners may also use their cat's name in a negative setting, like yelling at Fluffy to get off the stove. As a result, cats can probably learn to associate these familiar utterances with good and bad experiences,Saito notes. And that might not be great for human-cat relations. So only using a cat's name in a positive context and using a different term in a negative context could help cats and humans communicate more clearly.
So cats may recognize their names. But will they come when called?Don't get your hopes up.

(1)What made cats react strongly according to Saito's study?

    A.Their owners.
    B.Their own names.
    C.A random noun.
    D.A delicious meal.
    (2)The findings show
    .
A.a(chǎn)ll dogs will respond on hearing their names
B.it's extremely difficult to tell cats' names from dogs'
C.scientists know how to tell the difference between animals
D.there is difference in the number of words recognized among animals
(3)Which of the following could replace the underlined word "utterances" in Paragraph 4?

    A.words
    B.situations
    C.observations
    D.owners
(4)What should people avoid to improve human-cat communication?

A.Giving a treat or hug as a reward.
B.Calling their name in a positive context.
C.Using a different term in a negative setting.
D.Associating their name with bad experiences.

  • 3.There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level,we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us.Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress.
On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity.Immigrants bring it wherever they go,and it is a symbol of pride for their culture and means of coping with homesickness.
Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available,so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries.Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes about the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes.
We should embrace our heritage(傳統(tǒng))through our culture's food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food.It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it.Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.

(1)What's the function of food mentioned in the text?

    A.To help motivate homesickness.
    B.To show national identity.
    C.To reflect a country's history.
    D.To show a community's superiority.
(2)What does the underlined "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A.The specific traditional food.
    B.The national culture.
    C.A traditional expression of food.
    D.The old-fashioned taste.
(3)Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurant?

A.To attach cultural importance to their dishes.
B.To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.
C.To make the dishes popular among customers.
D.To present their own food culture in a new way.
(4)What's the author's attitude towards different food cultures?

    A.Negative.
    B.Balanced.
    C.Unfair.
    D.Unchangeable.
