Many people are fond of listening to music.Whether it's light music or jazz music,it can improve our moods.Music has been with us since very early times in human history.Have you ever wondered how music might affect our health?
Research shows that having musical training and listening to or playing music at an old age can help keep the brain healthy.Since listening to music is like exercising the brain, one can expect the benefits of better memory and mental sharpness as he or she ages.
Music can make you feel happy, excited or even pumped up.Listening to music that hits you in a special way causes your brain to release dopamine, which is known as a "feel-good" chemical. It causes us to feel happy and excited.Listening to music provides us with the same burst of happiness that we would get from eating a piece of chocolate.
Music can strengthen the heart and shorten the recovery time of patients who are suffering from heart disease.A study found that heart disease patients who listened to music for 30 minutes had lower blood pressure, slower heart rates and less sadness than those who didn't.Researchers from Drexel University found that cancer patients who either listened to music or worked with a music therapist had better blood pressure levels and improved moods.
Music can reduce levels of the stress hormone, which weakens the immune(免疫)system, increasing risk of heart disease, affecting learning and memory, lowering bone density(密度)and blood pressure, etc.Research found that by listening to just 50 minutes of uplifting music, the levels of antibodies in the human body increase.
Research has found that listening to music promotes better sleep patterns for people and even creates more restful sleep. In some cases, music might even be able to be used to effectively treat sleeplessness.Music can have positive effects on the soul and quality of life as well.

Most people around the world are right-handed.This fact also seems to have held true throughout history. In 1977 scientists studied works of art made at various times in history. Most of the people shown in these works of art are right handed,so scientists guessed that right-handedness has always been common. But what do Leonardo da Vinci,Marie Curie, and Albert Einstein have in common? They were all left-handed along with other famous people including Brad Pitt Prince William, and Barack Obama. In fact,an estimated 13 percent of the world's population may be left-handed.
Many researchers claim to have found relationships between left-handedness and various physical and mental characteristics, such as blond hair, blue eyes, and sleep difficulties.Other studies have found a higher-than-normal level of left-handed people in certain occupations(職業(yè)),including professional baseball players, architects,as well as prisoners. However, some of these connections are very weak, and others have not been proven.
What makes a person become right-handed rather than left-handed?One simple idea suggests that people normally get right-handedness from their parents.Studies have found that two right-handed parents have only a 9.5-percent chance of having a left-handed child, while two left-handed parents have a 26-percent chance of having a left-handed child.Another common theory is that left-handed people suffer mild brain damage during birth, which makes them left-handed.
Whatever the reasons behind it,people's attitudes toward left-handedness have changed a lot over the years.Statistics show that although 13 percent of young people are left-handed,only six percent of the elderly are left-handed.Left-handed children used to be punished until they began using their right hand like other children, but today people who are left-handed are no longer looked down on nor are they considered abnormal For most people today, either case is perfectly acceptable. There are even a number of shops now selling products for left-handed people, such as left-handed can openers, guitars, and even a left-handed camera.

Natalie Doan,14,has always felt lucky to live in Rockaway,New York.Living just a few blocks from the beach,Natalie can see the ocean and hear the wave from her house. "It's the ocean that makes Rockaway so special," she says.
On October 29,2012,that ocean turned fierce. That night,Hurricane Sandy attacked the East Coast, and Rockaway was hit especially hard.Fortunately,Natalie's family escaped to Brooklyn shortly before the city's bridge closed.
When they returned to Rockaway the next day, they found their neighborhood in ruins. Many of Natalie's friends had lost their homes and were living far away. All around her, people were suffering, especially the elderly.Natalie's school was so damaged that she had to temporarily attend a school in Brooklyn.
In the following few days, the men and women helping Rockaway recover inspired Natalie.Volunteers came with carloads of donated clothing and toys.Neighbors devoted their spare time to helping others rebuild.Teenagers climbed dozens of flights of stairs to deliver water and food to elderly people trapped in powerless highrise buildings.
"My mom tells me that I can't control what happens to me," Natalie says,"but I can always choose how I deal with it."
Natalie's choice was to help.
She created a website page matching survivors in need with donors who wanted to help.Natalie posted introduction about a boy named Patrick, who lost his baseball card collecting when his house burned down.Within days,Patrick's collection was replaced.
In the coming months, her website page helped lots of kids:Christopher, who received a new basketball;Charlie, who got a new keyboard.Natalie also worked with other organizations to bring much-need supplies to Rockaway. Her efforts made her a famous person.Last April, she was invited to the White House and honored as a Hurricane Sandy Champion of Change.
Today, the scars(瘡痍)of destruction are still seen in Rockaway, but hope is in the air.The streets are clear, and many homes have been rebuilt. "I can't imagine living anywhere but Rockaway," Natalie declares."My neighborhood will be back, even stronger than before."

With the development of the computer, virtual reality(虛擬現(xiàn)實(shí))steps in our life.If something is virtual, then it is created by computer technology and appears as if it were real.VR is a computer system with a special headset(耳機(jī)).When you put on the headset, you will look at two tiny television screens. They are so close to your eyes as if you see just one picture and you will believe that you have entered a different world. In many systems, you also wear special gloves. With the gloves you can reach out and touch things in the unreal world.
The first VR games, which have already been sold round the world, enable you to drive a sports car,fly a plane,or fight an enemy. In the future,it may be difficult to tell the virtual world of the games from the real world outside. However,VR is not just for entertainment. One day, delighted children will be able to learn geography by observing exciting foreign countries without having to leave their classrooms. They will be excited to learn history by visiting the pyramids of Egypt. In addition, businesses will be able to use VR for many tasks.Pilots will be able to practise flying virtual planes before they go into the air.VR can help us improve the world in hundreds of ways.
However, some people have warned that there could be dangers. It might be dangerous if we do something wrong,or if people do not want to return to reality because it is safer than real life.Besides,we will forget how to live and work with real people.
There will be some problems with VR,as it is new for us.However, one thing is for sure:VR is here to stay.Get ready to step into another world!
