試題詳情
On March 16,2018,eight-year-old Tanitoluwa "Tani" Adewumi, beat 73 young competitors to win the New York State Chess Championship in his age category-kindergarten to third grade. While the achievement is great in itself, what makes it even greater is that the youngster, who was homeless at the time, began learning the game less than a year ago.
Tani and his family arrived in New York City from Nigeria in 2017,seeking religious protection.A church pastor(牧師)helped find the family of four space in a homeless shelter and soon after,Tani entered the local elementary school. It was here that the young talent was first introduced to the basics of chess by a part-time teacher.Attracted by the game, the then seven-year-old begged his mother,Oluwatoyin,to allow him to join the school's chess club.Concerned the family would be unable to afford the fees and expenses, which add up to thousands of dollars,Oluwatoyin emailed Russel Makofsky, who ran the club.To her surprise and delight,Makofsky agreed
to waive all costs for young Tani
.The rest,as they say,is history. The young boy,who has got seven prizes in less than a year, currently ranks 27 in America in his age category.
Though the chess club certainly helps,it is Tani's devotion to the game that is largely responsible for his great success. Not surprisingly,Tani's incredible story, first reported by The New York Times, has resulted in an outpouring of support from the American public. It has raised $200,000 in just ten days, far more than the original goal of $50,000,and the funds keep coming.
Since they now have a home, the Adewumis have decided to "pay it forward" and donate the over $200,000 collected on GoFundMe.They plan to give 10 percent of the funds raised to the church that has supported them. The rest will be placed in the newly-created Tanitoluwa Adewumi Trust and given to African immigrants to America who are struggling the way the family was.

It was a quiet village in which there was a military camp(軍營(yíng)).It was far from the towns and cities and there were some high mountains around.Of course it was a good place for training the new soldiers. But it was difficult for the young men to go outside.Mr.White,an officer of forty, was strict with them and he hardly let them leave the camp.
Once Mr.White was ill in bed.He couldn't work and a young officer,Mr.Hunt, began to train the new soldiers instead of him.He knew the young men well and let nine soldiers go to the nearest town to have a holiday. But night fell and none came back to the camp.He was worried about it and stood at the gate.It was five to twelve when Mr.Hunt decided to go to the town and see what was happening with the young men.He started the car quickly and set off.At that moment the nine soldiers came back.It seemed they were all drunk.Of course they found the officer was angry.

I study English literature at university and have always been proud of Britain's literary heritage(文學(xué)遺產(chǎn)).Some British authors that you may have heard of are Charles Dickens and Jane Austen. These writers are famous all over the world because their books have been translated into many different languages. In the UK,their novels are celebrated as some of the best that have ever been written. We say that these novels are "classic" because they are still read and enjoyed years after their publication.
I read classic novels because they are part of my university lessons but also because I enjoy them. They can teach you a lot about how people used to live and what society was like in the past.Novels like Hard Times by Charles Dickens remind us of the poverty in London during the Industrial Revolution while Jane Austen's fiction shows us what family life was like in the 18th century.
Classic novels usually have memorable stories land interesting characters. One of my favourite books is Charles Dickens Great Expectations. It is about a boy called Pip who suddenly receives a lot of money from a mysterious supporter. As he grows up,his character changes:he becomes quite selfish and mean.Another important character is Miss Havisham. When she was young, her fiancé ran away on their wedding day.She lives in a dark house and still wears her wedding dress. She is a fascinating character, both sad and scary.
Reading classic novels enriches my knowledge and life experience. And it has become part of life.
