FOUR BOOKS YOU SHOULD READ Cruel Beautiful World Written by Caroline Leavitt
At age 16,Lucy is a lonely orphan living with older sister Charlotte and devoted aunt Iris in Waltham,Massachusetts. On the last day of school, she runs away with her 30-year-old teacher,William, and settles in a hillside cottage in rural Pennsylvania, near his new teaching job.Though Lucy feels increasingly isolated,William won't allow her any outlet.Leavitt draws upon a real-life crime that involved a girl she knew in high school. She tells her story from multiple viewpoints, building tension and sympathy for Lucy and Charlotte as tragedy swallows them.By Gaslight Written by Steven Price
Price,an award-winning Canadian poet, achieves an extraordinary achievement of Dickensian storytelling in his weighty second novel. His hero is William Pinkerton, son of the founder of the legendary detective agency, who finds clues in his late father's safe to the case of William Shade. This mythic thief had disturbed and upset his father.William tracks a Shade accomplice(共犯),Charlotte Reckitt,to London, only to find she's been found dead in the Thames.Price ably arranges dozens of interlinking plotlines as he spans three continents and several decades, from American Civil War battlefields to Scotland Yard at the end of the 19th Century. The Invisibility Cloak Written by Ge Fei
Beijing-based Ge Fei(pen name for Liu Yong)won the 2015 Mao Dun Literature Prize for fiction "describing the changing spirit of Chinese society" over the past century. The Invisibility Cloak, his first English publication, revolves around Cui,a divorced man who creates customized hi-fi speakers for Beijing's newly wealthy and a few intellectuals.Beijing's rapid expansion has left Cui longing for an invisible life away from the city. His chance comes when he agrees to build a world-class sound system for a gangster(匪徒).Ge Fei's nice work, translated from the Chinese by Canaan Morse, should find many fans.Messy Written by Tim Harford
The temptation to be neat and tidy may be powerful, but "we would be better served by embracing a degree of mess," Harford argues. His defense of the creative potential of the imperfect, random, vague, difficult, diverse and even dirty is refreshing.Reaching into the arts, politics, business, science and technology,Harford makes an appealing case for opening up to disorder and luck.

12.Last month,my husband and I completed what some of our friends considered a foolish task:a 32-day,5,232-mile camping trip with children in our Volkswagen van, without "high-tech" to occupy the children.
It was the screen less journey that showered me with doubts. But is "boredom" senseless? My friend Renee, who has driven cross-country with her three kids eight times, calls boredom the mother of creativity. She's not the only one who sees virtue in blank time.In a recently published paper, researchers at East Anglia University in England concluded that the trance like (發(fā)呆的) state helps recharge the mind and is "central to learning and creativity".I wasn't trying to make my kids smarter.Neither do I dislike high-tech.But I understand too well the power of mini screens to transform our kids into zombies (木訥的人).
On Day 1,our 7-year-old son announced "Texas is so boring!".The next day, struggling against his seat belt,he yelled he couldn't take much more of this. His 5-year-old sister was better at the long hours playing make-believe with the stuffed animals. On Day 3,he began count mountains and see pandas and dolphins in distant clouds in the Texas sky.I often joined the kids in the back, where we did thumb-and-toe wrestle. With well-known mountains ahead,my husband told the children the past legends of them."Arizona is not as boring as Texas," our son declared.
I hope the trip gave kids some lazy, unstructured time to learn something about valuing the trip instead of looking for the fastest way to burn it up.I don't always make the right call as a parent but I know that in banning the small screen we made the right choice this time.

A.Her friends are highly against it.
B.She disliked advanced technology.

(2)What happened during the cross-country drive?
A.Their son got worse at boredom.
B.Her kids had a tough time riding in the vehicle.
C.Their son relieved himself by watching animals outside.
D.The time spent without screens strengthened the family bond.
(3)The underlined part "the fastest way" in the last paragraph refers to
A.the speediest route to finish the journey
B.the ability to observe the surroundings
C.the interest of playing games with others
D.the choice of killing time by playing digital devices
(4)Which is the best title for the text?
A.Is Driving Long Distances Good for Children?
B.A Touching Cross-country Trip of My Family
C.What's Wrong with Boredom without High-tech?
D.Creative Kids out of Parents' Reasonable Choice組卷:4引用:2難度:0.5 -
13.UN Humanitarian Chief Mark Lowcock today released US$15 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund(CERF)to help fund global efforts to contain the COVID-19 virus.
The announcement came as the World Health Organization(WHO)upgraded the global risk of the coronavirus outbreak to "very high"—its top level of risk assessment. The WHO has said there is still a chance of containing the virus if its chain of transmission is broken.
The UN funding has been released to the WHO and the United Nations Children's Fund(UNICEF).It will fund essential activities including being aware of the spread of the virus investigating cases, and putting national laboratories into use.
The WHO has called for USS675 million to fund the fight against coronavirus. There is a window of opportunity to contain the spread of the virus if countries take strong measures to detect cases early, isolate and care for patients, and trace contacts.
Emergency Relief Coordinator and Under-Secretary-Gieneral for Humanitarian Affairs,Mark Lowcock said, "We do not yet see evidence that the virus is spreading freely. As long as that's the case,we still have a chance of containing it,by strengthening surveillance, conducting thorough outbreak investigations to identify contacts and applying appropriate measures to prevent further spread"
"This announcement from the UN's Emergency Fund will help countries with fragile health systems improve their detection and response operations. It has the potential to save the lives of millions of vulnerable people. "Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.WHO Director-General,said, "The potential spread of the virus to countries with weaker health systems is one of our biggest concerns. These funds will help support these countries get ready for detecting and isolating cases, protecting their health workers, and treating patients with dignity and appropriate care. This will help us save lives and push back the virus."
"At this critical moment, every effort must be made to push back against the outbreak," said UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore. "These funds will support our global efforts to promote weaker health systems and inform children, pregnant women and families about how to protect themselves."

14.People diet to look more attractive.Fish diet to avoid being beaten up,thrown out of their social group, and getting eaten as a result. That is the fascinating conclusion of the latest research into fish behavior by a team of Australian scientists.
The research team have discovered that subordinate fish voluntarily diet to avoid challenging their larger competitors. "In studying gobies we noticed that only the largest two individuals,a male and female ,had breeding(繁殖) rights within the group, "explains Marian Wong. "All other group members are non-breeding females, each being 5~10% smaller than its next largest competitor. We wanted to find out how they maintain this precise size separation."
The reason for the size difference was easy to see.Once a subordinate fish grows to within 5-10% of the size of its larger competitor,it causes a fight which usually ends in the smaller goby being driven away from the group.More often than not, the evicted fish is then eaten up.
It appeared that the smaller fish were keeping themselves small in order to avoid challenging the boss fish.Whether they did so voluntarily,by restraining how much they ate,was not clear. The research team decided to do an experiment. They tried to fatten up some of the subordinate gobies to see what happened. To their surprise, the gobies simply refused the extra food they were offered, clearly preferring to remain small and avoid fights, over having a feast.
The discovery challenges the traditional scientific view of how boss individuals keep their position in a group.Previously it was thought that large individuals simply used their weight and size to threaten their subordinates and take more of the food for themselves,so keeping their competitors small.
While the habits of gobies may seem a little mysterious,Dr.Wong explains that understanding the relationships between boss and subordinate animals is important to understanding how hierarchical (等級(jí)的) societies remain stable.
The research has proved the fact that voluntary dieting is a habit far from exclusive to humans. "As yet,we lack a complete understanding of how widespread the voluntary reduction of food intake is in nature," the researchers comment. "Data on human dieting suggests that, while humans generally diet to improve health or increase attractiveness, rarely does it improve longterm health and males regularly prefer females that are fatter than the females' own ideal."
