試題詳情
A recent study showed that the experiences children have in their first few years are important. These experiences affect the development of the brain. When children receive more attention, they often have higher IQs.Babies receive information when they see, hear and feel things, which makes connections between different parts of the brain. There are a hundred trillion connections in the brain of a three-year-old child.
Researcher Judit Gervain tested how good newborns are at telling different sound patterns. The researchers produced images of the brains of babies as they heard different sound patterns. For example, one order was mu-ba-ba.This is the pattern "A -B- B".Another order was mu-ba-ge.This is the pattern "A-B-C".The images showed that the part of the brain responsible for speech was more active during the "A-B-B" pattern. This shows that babies can tell the difference between different patterns. They also were sensitive(敏感的)to where it occurred in the order.
Gervain is excited by these findings because the order of sounds is the base of words and grammar,"Position is key to language," she says. "If something is at the beginning or at the end,it makes a big difference: 'John caught the bear' is very different from 'The bear caught John'."
Researchers led by scientist Patricia Kuhl have found that language delivered by televisions, audio books, the Internet,or smartphones--no matter how educational-- doesn't appear to be enough for children's brain development. They carried out a study of nine-month-old American babies. They expected the first group who'd watched videos in Chinese to show the same kind of learning as the second group who were brought face-to- face with the same sounds.Instead they found a huge difference. The babies in the second group were able to distinguish (辨別)between similar Chinese sounds as well as native listeners. But the other babies一regardless of whether they had watched the video or listened to the audio-learned nothing.

D
A.By recognizing babies' different appearances.
B.By producing images of new words for babies.

Seventy years ago,a group of well-known people from the art world headed by an Austrian conductor decided to hold an international festival of music, dance and theatre in Edinburgh. The idea was to reunite Europe after the Second World War.
It quickly attracted famous names such as Alec Guinness,Richard Burton,Dame Margot Fonteyn and Marlene Dietrich as well as the big symphony orchestras(交響樂(lè)團(tuán)).It became a fixed event every August and now attracts 400,000 people yearly.
At the same time, the "Fringe" appeared as a challenge to the official festival.Eight theatre groups turned up uninvited in 1947,in the belief that everyone should have the right to perform, and they did so in a public house disused for years.
Soon, groups of students firstly from Edinburgh University, and later from the universities of Oxford and Cambridge,Durham and Birmingham were making the journey to Edinburgh each summer to perform theatre by little-known writers of plays in small halls to the local people.
Today the "Fringe",once less recognised, has far outgrown the festival with around 1,500 performances of theatre, music and dance on every one of the 21 days it lasts. And yet as early as 1959,with only 19 theatre groups performing, some said it was getting too big.
A paid administrator was first employed only in 1971,and today there are eight administrators working all year round and the number rises to 150 during August itself. In 2004 there were 200 places housing 1,695 shows by over 600 different groups from 50 different countries.More than 1.25 million tickets were sold.

Women have been making scientific discoveries since ancient times.Twelve women have won the Nobel Prize for Science, one of the highest honors in the world. Some women scientists never married, some worked with their husbands, and others raised large families. It has been difficult for women to be successful scientists.
In the early 1800s in England,Mary Anning became one of the first women recognized for her discoveries about the ancient history of the earth.Mary and her father collected fossils(化石)in their village on the south coast of Great Britain.Fossils are parts of plants or animals that have been saved in rocks for millions of years.
When she was only twelve years old,Mary became the first person to find the almost complete skeletons
(骨架)of several animals that no longer existed on the earth. She didn't become famous for her discoveries at that time because she often sold her fossils to get money to support her family.
In 1891,a young Polish woman named Marie Sklodowska traveled to Paris to study physics. She did so because she could not get a college education in Poland. She began working in the laboratory of a man named Pierre Curie.Marie and Pierre Curie got married and made many discoveries together. They received the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 along with another scientist.Marie Curie became the first person to be awarded a second Nobel Prize in 1911,this time for Chemistry.Marie Curie was one of the few women at the time who became famous as a scientist.
