Dear students,
I'm writing to call everyone to concentrate on the problems of the environment.
Over the years,we have come to realise that we would have made good use of energy. Our environment is getting worse and worse. We must take effective measure to protect the environment. We should get into the habit of being environmental friendly.
Firstly,we should go to school on our foot or by bike as possible.Secondly,we should turn off the lights when we leave a room.Lastly developing the habit of save water is also important. As we all know, nowadays a lot of people are healthy because of the seriously polluting environment. So let's take steps in our daily life.Remember, actions speak loud than words.
Yours sincerely,
Tom

  • 1.When she first started learning about the climate change from one of her elders,F(xiàn)awn Sharp was invited on a helicopter flight over the Olympic Mountains to survey the Mount Anderson glacier. But the glacier was gone, melted by the warming climate.Sharp had a deep sense of loss when she discovered the glacier wasn't there anymore.
Loss is a growing issue for people working and living on the front lines of climate change. And that gave Jennifer Wren Atkinson,a full-time lecturer at the University of Washington Bothell,US,an idea for a class.
This term, she taught students on the Bothell campus about the emotional burdens of environmental studies. She used the experiences of Native American tribes(部落),scientists and activists, and asked her 24 students to face the reality that there is no easy fix - that "this is such an intractable problem that they're going to be dealing with it for the rest of their lives".
Student Cody Dillon used to be a climate science skeptic (懷疑論者).Then he did his own reading and research, and changed his mind.Dillon wasn't going into environmental work - he was a computer-science major.Yet,the potential for a worldwide environmental catastrophe seemed so real to him five years ago that he quit his job and became a full-time volunteer for an environmental group that worked on restoration (恢復(fù)) projects.
Six months into the work,he decided that Atkinson's class was just what he was looking for - a place where he could discuss his concerns about a changing climate.
Atkinson said she hopes the class helped her students prepare themselves for the amount of environmental loss that will happen over their lifetimes.
"We are already changing the planet - so many species are going to be lost, displaced or massively impacted," she said. "The future isn't going to be what they imagined."

D.To show scientists' concern about the Mount Anderson glacier.
(2)What's the main purpose of Atkinson's class?

A.To explore how different people deal with climate change.
B.To get students more concerned about the environmental issue.
C.To find solutions to the environmental issue of Olympic Mountains.
D.To teach students how to conduct research about the environment.
(3)Which of the following best explains "intractable" underlined in Paragraph 3?

    A.Simple.
    B.Difficult.
    C.Common.
    D.Interesting.
(4)How did Atkinson's class influence Dillon?

A.It made him work as a part-time volunteer for restoration projects.
B.It made him realise a planet-wide climate disaster would happen.
C.It encouraged him to be more involved in environmental protection.
D.It discouraged him to work on restoration projects for the environment.

  • 3.Can't Resist Junk Food?Study Suggests You Try This Simple Trick You're tired and hungry. Then you catch a whiff of something delicious, probably fried and almost certainly fattening. It is fried chicken!(1)
A new research says that exposing to the smell of junk food for at least two minutes can actually help you make healthier food choices.
Let's take a closer look at this process.Have you ever noticed that whatever appetizing treat catches your nose's attention tends to be most appealing just after you first smell it?What will happen if you're standing in line after a couple of minutes?(2)
And recent science says that this is actually the right moment to walk away.
The results of a series of experiments, including field studies at a supermarket and at a middle school cafeteria, show that extended exposure (of more than two minutes) to junk food smell (e.g,cookie smell)leads to lower purchases of unhealthy foods compared with healthy smell(e.g.strawberry smell).(3)
That is why long exposure to junk food smell can be as satisfactory as actually having it in your mouth, which in turn decreases the desire for consumption of junk food.
       (4)
When the exposure to smell of healthy food were examined, food choices were not profoundly influenced. The reason for this is that healthy food are not connected with reward in our brain and therefore have little influence on what we desire.
So next time you're feeling you don't have the will power to resist that French fries,it might be as simple as sitting there and smelling all that sweetness for just a minute or two.(5)

A.But wait a minute before you order.
B.It's a response that has been researched.
C.Get the satisfaction with none of the calories.
D.It isn't quite as irresistible as it was just moments ago.
E.However,it's not the same case with smell of healthy food.
F.It's the same as actually eating it because your desire to eat it is satisfied.
G.The brain doesn't necessarily distinguish between a pleasurable smell or taste.
